Spoke with S&W today and it will be there in the a.m. to be completely refinished on their dime. I also noticed other damage to the front of the slide while packing it and informed them of it. Hope to have it back next week and it better not come back two tone like the stock 4566!!

I'm beginning to think S&W has outsourced their gunsmith work to China.

LOL they are now using lead paint. in all seriousness Im glad I read this post. I think my next gun(leaning towards 1911) may now be something other than a S&W. |

Damn it. Now I'm all worried.
I'm going to send in my 1076 for them to give it a checkup and address how its not shooting straight (shoots low even with an insanly low replaced front sight) No, its not me, it was bench fired. I figure this is the one S&W I'll never let go so I might as well have it tricked out by the PC Matt H. 3913TSW, Hogue grips 5904, Meprolight Sights. 4006 Hogue Grips. 4040PD, CCW 1076-FBI 1911PD 5" 637, Wife's CCW Home Brewed AR-15 |

Nitrous, personally I'd skip S&W and send that 1076 to Wayne Novak. He did my 1006 and it groups like my 1911s now. He knows S&W semis inside and out, prices are reasonable and they are fairly fast. Depending on how mine comes back I may never ship a gun back to S&W again. Their QC has gone down the tubes.

Send it off to Karl Sokol at Chestnut Mountain Sports. He's the only person who's allowed to touch my guns. Not that there aren't other good gunsmiths out there, but I've been bitten a few times and I just don't trust anyone else. Karl has built many revolvers for me ranging from CCW to competition use, BHP's, Sigs, S&W autos, 1911's, AR's and Winchester lever actions for me or my friends. I just got one back from him and he's got 2 more of mine now. I can't say enough for his work. Results of the 1998 Massachusetts gun laws: It is important to keep in mind the ISP reports show that firearm related homicides decreased 56% from 1994 to 1998. From 1998 to 2002, firearm related homicides increased 48%. During the same time, firearm related accidental deaths have increased 200%. Will work for ammo. |

Way back when the Mod. 581 was recalled, I sent mine in for the work (mid '80's). It came back with scraps on the topstrap that looked to be from a vise. Sent it back, they refinished good as new and now/still my favorite revolver. Damaging stuff while in for repair is nothing new.

I sent in my PC1911 for a series of repairs a while back, and while they got everything done to my esential satisfaction, they lightly scuffed up the area and edge behind the thumb safety (which was replaced). I've toyed with the idea of complaining about it and asking for a refinish, but frankly I'm afraid I'd come away with more problems than just a few scratches, so I've let it go (and let a carefully-managed Sharpie do the work).

I almost just let it slide also but I figured they broke it they can buy or fix it. If it wasn't so rare, I would have let it slide but if I ever decide to sell it, I'd like to keep it as nice as possible for the next owner. Should have it back by Friday and they refinished the entire gun to ensure it matched so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed till UPS shows up!

It's really going to suck for you if they stamp it "U" as if they did a standard refinish job for a customer instead of just refinishing it to fix what they screwed up. That could really destroy the collector value of it.
I'm totally done with the PC for anything. That's what Karl Sokol is for. I'd rather pay for something to be done and know it's done right instead of sending it in for free warranty work and not knowing what you'll get back! When S&W refinishes a gun, they stamp a "U" on the side of the front of the triggerguard, noting that it's been refinished. jed1177,I got word from Snider today,he doesn't have that rear sight you need. Sorry.I was hoping to surprise you with one.
The 60's and the 70's.The days of the revolver and the nightstick.I am proud to have been a member of that generation of cops. We paved the way.We learned by doing and often by dying, and we passed our knowledge to the current generation. The training is better now.The weapons are better now. The technology is better now.But we paved the way.We are old men now,but we truly were the new centurions. |

Genlemen, Another explanation of the "U" stamped by the serial no. in the yoke: S&W Customer Service explained to me that a "U" is found on guns that were taken back in-trade (for new guns) from LE and Corrections agencies and is intended to indicate that it has been inspected for correct function and can now be sent for resale through the distributor network as "USED". I'm not aware that a standard refinsh job is also denoted by the letter "U". Regards, Jerry
