I recently traded a Super-Blackhawk for a very clean two-tone 39-2 with a friend, the gun was made in 79 or 80. I have a question about the trigger. In single action mode, right at the beginning of the take-up, there is a slight catch or click. Once this is passed, the rest of the take-up is smooth, and the let-off is crisp and predictable at 5 pounds. This is a minor problem if indeed it is a problem at all. I was just wondering whether anyone else had experience with Smith autos...

My 4516 and 908s do the same thing, I think. Sort of a two stage pull. I beleive I remember reading others make the same observation. I always take it as the pistol telling me we're about to do serious buisness. Also it will sure show a flench.

Guys, what the little click is telling you is that the trigger tension spring on the trigger bar needs the tension adjusted.
If you look at the trigger bar from the top of a field stripped pistol, you should see a small 2 finger leaf spring applying tension to the trigger. Do a search, there are several threads with picture showing the spring and advising how to re-tension the spring. |

I found a thread which described the problem and solution exactly. Quick fix, I used a small relay spring adjusting tool I happened to have from my years at Ma Bell's. The info is much appreciated...

Hey Dachshund,
Would you mind posting a link to the site you found? I'd appreciate it. Jack NRA Certified Pistol Instructor NRA Certified Range Safety Officer "Experience is a dear teacher, but fools will learn at no other." -- Benjamin Franklin |
