I didn't find this question addressed in the archives.

Do you feel the 59 series pistols benefit from a recoil buffer? They sound useful in theory, but I was wondering how commonly they are used in this forum community.

Thanks!

Opinons will vary but I feel they're a cure looking for a problem. Keep a good, correct spring in your gun and it will work as designed.

Oh yes, they will work without one.

But it is from continuous battering that they are supposed to protect the gun from. I know that for the 1911, recoil buffers are widely recommended.

I was just wondering if anyone has actually seen any peening on one of their 59's (or 39's) that did not have a buffer.

Avoid them like the plaque. I had them in my 1076 and 1006, within 50 rounds they were chewed up and stopped the guns. There not cheap either, spend the money on ammo and remember Smith has a lifetime warranty and realistically you will never put enough rounds thru the gun to harm it especially 9mm!

I contacted the factory several years ago about my M59 and they recommended against using lots +P, so I have. I know opinions vary.

I agree with the plague response. Every S&W pistol (1076, 1006 and 4566) I have tried them on they broke apart and jammed the action. They aren't cheap either. Don't waste your $$. If a gun needs a buffer the manufacturer will supply one.

Using +P ammo in the first gen semiautos is NOT recommended !!! If you feel the need to carry such ammo I would look into getting a good used 3913 or a 5906 .

S&W M&P 38Spl circa 1905
S&W 19-3 , 39-2 , 59 , 469
S&W 1006 , 1066 , 3913 , 4026 , 6906
S&W SW99 40 cal , M&P40

I use the buffers as an indicator of the spring I need to use in my 1026 and 4576, if it chews them up too quick I feel it needs a heavier spring, I definitely would not have one in while carrying. I do keep one in both my 9PPC and my Super 9 and have not had to replace yet after untold rounds, so it's probably not needed
