Own a few plastic Sigmas and a 639, seriously considering a used Hi-Cap S&W to find a middle ground. The 639 is the best pistol I've ever owned for accuracy, but only holds 9 rounds. Sigma will shoot all day with the double stack magazines, but are as likely of hitting the target as throwing the gun from 50+ feet. Any ideas?
"Any ideas?" Practice more with your sigma. Seriously though, the Sigma might be more of a challege to shoot accurately because of the heavy trigger pull but you should still be able to hit the target at 50'. Have you tried letting a more experienced shooter try the gun? It might help you figure out if it's the gun or the shooter. Sigmas have notoriously heavy triggers but if you master it, you should be able to shoot anything well.

If you are looking at S&W pistols, I would recommend a 3rd generation auto. 5906 or 6906, either one is good to go.
P.S. I had an early Sigma. Close to worst trigger of any handgun I have ever owned. The only thing worse I have personally shot was some horrendous Spanish made .380 I bought back in the early 80's. It lasted one range session, then it was off to the gunshow. Ditto the Sigma. And this is from a S&W fanatic (I have 15 S&W semi-autos right now and have owned many others in the past). Maybe the later Sigma's are greatly improved, I have never been motivated to find out.

You're kidding me aren't you, Murph? I've been shooting for 41 years. The Sigma is a bottom feeder poly gun. I've owned a few guns in my day and currently own 2 Sigmas, a 9F and 40VE. I just dumped a 9VE after a year. I guess if you like just hitting the target at 50 feet, the Sigma is just what the doctor ordered. Try grouping a magazine full at 50 feet. I see the Sigma as a trunk gun and something light enough to throw under the shoulder while hiking.
The 5906 was recommended to me today, but he didn't have any for sale. He said he had a scratched up black model 5906 a few months ago he sold for $200
