It seems to have been dropped from production. Not on the website or in the 2006 catalog. I thought it just came out in 2005 and it was already dropped? Anyone knows why?
There is one NIB for sale locally but it is priced at $669 and I do not feel that is great a price. Am I wrong about this? Regards, God's Speed To Our Troops. |

No longer in production.
It did well when it was first released, but it's not an inexpensive pistol to make (or buy). From what I've heard lack of sales caused it to be recently discontinued. FWIW, I've always enjoyed my personal 4013TSW (railed), and I'm presently carrying an issued one. Terrific pistol. Reliable, accurate and lightweight to wear all day. The SW990L is a nicely done lightweight compact .40 S&W pistol, as well. A close friend has grown to really enjoy his SW99c (TDA) chambered in .40 S&W. Sort of a toss-up whether he likes it or his 3913TSW better. Thanks Fastbolt. I also have a SW99OL Compact in 9mm, it's a great little gun. I do not have a 3913 but I do have a 908S which is also a great gun.
Instead of getting the 4040PD I purchased a NIB Model 64 3". I do love those K Frames! This is my first 3" K Frame. I have been carrying my Model 10 2" as of late and I am looking forward to seeing how the 3" 64 carries day to day. I did pick up a 4003TSW a couple of weeks ago and it is just a wonderful handgun. The gun is built like a tank it seems, very thight but perfect reliability so far. Way more accurate than I am! To boot my Surefire light I had for my SW99 fullsize fits on it, nice bonus as it now is my home defense gun, took over from the SW99. I do love the S&W 3rd generation autos but 4 of my last 5 S&Ws have been wheelguns. The tally so far: S&W 99 Fulsize S&W 990L Compact S&W 4003TSW S&W Sigma VE S&W 908S S&W 6906 S&W 22A Vs S&W 12-2 2" S&W 10-11 2" S&W 63 4" S&W 64 3" Autos are in the lead but the wheelguns are trying to catch up! Next on the list to get are a J-Frame and either a M&P in .357Sig or a Model 520. What do you know of the 520? Regards, God's Speed To Our Troops. |

Gander mountain in Toledo Ohio has a NIB 4040PD in the case.
The man on top of the mountain didn't fall there. |

My local shop in Knoxville has a NIB 4040PD for under $500 as well. It's a slick little piece, kind of like a 3913LS on steroids, and I would have picked it up already if I didn't favor the 9mm over the .40S&W.

I agree with lendringser357's statement that a 4040PD is "kind of like a 3913LS on steroids". Although, it's not noticably larger in physical size than a 3913LS. I don't understand why the pistol never really caught on. I bought one about two years ago, shortly after they were first put on the market. I believe I paid somewhere between $500 and $600 for it from a dealer at a gun show. That was a great price at the time. Like a 3913 it is fairly small, thin, light, reliable, and easy to carry. The factory rubber grips feel great too. It also shoots nice for a compact .40. It's really one of my favorite carry pieces. Too bad they d/c'd the model.

Yes it's a Gander Mt store here is Houston that wants $669 for the 4040PD. It's still there as of today. I do want one but the price was not where I could justify buying it to fit any "need" I have.
I picked up a NIB Model 64-8 3" instead, not that I needed that either! Maybe I will get the 4040 if it is still there in a couple of weeks. The NIB 4003TSW I picked up a couple of weeks ago at the same store for $559 (Which I felt was a good price) was there for a couple of weeks when I finally picked it up so who knows..... The S&W autos are not as popular as the Euro guns around here for some reason. Reagrds, God's Speed To Our Troops. |

The same Gander Mt already has a used M&P for sale for $559, too high a price for a used one. Makes me wonder how a gun that new ended up in the used section alread. I have picked a couple good deals from them on used guns. A very very nice Model 63 for $210 and a nice 6906 for $325.

Ruggles, the M63 was a steal (nice find). Regards, Richard
They are doing the best they can with the limited abilities they have. |

Thanks richard, I felt that way too. As the gentleman behind the counter was ringing me up he said, "that must have gotten here yesterday, I was off" I could detect the "Damn if I had saw that I would have gotten it" in his voice.
Strange thing about Gander Mt is they have no ideal what guns they are getting in, rather new or used from their company. they show up and out they go on sale. I was looking at a Winchester Model 94 in 30/30 about 2 months ago and one of the Gander Mt guys was putting a new Model 94 on the rack next to me. He set it down, I picked it up, it was a Trapper model in .44 magnum for $399, it left with me. Total time it spent on the display rack before being sold, one second! Sometimes it reminds me of a friggin treasure hunt in there. God's Speed To Our Troops. |

Oh well... I guess nobody mourns the loss of the short-lived 4040PD. I reckon there's the reason for it's demise.

Bad timing, more than anything else. It's a nice little pistol but the switch was already on to polymer DAO-type pistols when Smith released it. That's what new buyers seem to want. Slowly but surely the 3rd Gen TDAs are disappearing from the S&W line. Shorty |

I'd like to have one of those! S&W is always making more models than my budget (and requirements) allows, at any given time. I may get one yet. |

I think S&W did the 4040 an injustice by offering it with only a single finish option. A natural color stainless slide and silver finished frame might have sold better, but with that space-age scandium frame why did they pick the least sophisticated finish? Seems like the stainless slide with melonite finish and the black scandium frame might have presented the best of all alternatives: a hight tech, black (a.k.a. "tactical"), extremely rust resistant finish-- a convergence of marketing and functionality. Whatever they used on the 4040PD slide looked really cheap-assed, something more suitable for a Kel-Tec, but alas, S&W forgot to call me up and get my opinion before they proceeded with production.
Maybe they won't make the same mistake twice ;>) |
