I have an original dust cover for a S&W model 39. Anyone know what the value of these are? Thanks.

Never heard of or seen one. Picture please for educational purposes.

I have the original instruction sheet that came with the pistol as well, it shows the dust cover (it lists as a military dust shield) with instructions on how to mount it.

You are the only other person that has one or knows what it is!I got mine in 1971 when I got my 39 from Jesse E. Harpe/Tampa,Fla.Still have pistol and dust cover in box.(they gave me the dust cover) it was a stamped and expendable military item. A lot of 39's were going to vietnam.

I have only seen a single one in about 40 years of gunning........and it wasn't mine!
Fairly rare, but I don't have clue about value.

They are pretty scarce... about as common as honest democRATs in fact...

So few are sold it is hard to set a price...

I'm hurt however... I bought a 39 from Jesse Harpe about 79 too...but no dust cover.

As an aside, I drove by Jesse Harpe's shot a week or two ago... and there is nothing there but an empty lot with the flooded little opening where the tunnel was to get into his test fire tunnel.

I go down cass st when I am downtown just to ck on the location. Area has really gone down since the 67 riots. business has really vacated the area. The building was razed about two years ago.All the rubble was pushed down the access trap door into the basement shooting station(the had to have a sump pump to keep the water out).The huge two bank vault doors that enclosed the walk in safe-- went somewhere.There are no gunstores like that anymore!

Where is this cover attached and how? I'm intrigued.

Ever wonder what those two narrow grooves on the front of the M-39 frame, just under the slide, were for?

The dust shield is attached to the frame, wraps over the slide and covers the ejection port when the slide is forward.

The slide stop goes through the hole; the two folded 'hooks' on the lower right of his picture snap into those grooves on the front of the frame.

FWIW the SC of S&W, 3rd Edition says to add $100 to the price of the gun for an dust cover.

I remember the big walk in safe very well... it would be open during business hours... and I kept a sharp eye on the interior to see if any blue boxes showed up... which would mean the arrival of S&W revolvers... which were very hard to get back then... they were always in short supply for some reason I have not been able to identify.

I miss Harpe... he was somewhat grumpy...but a gold mine of knowledge if you could get him to talk... and his right hand man Herb was a great guy... often wondered what happened to him...

Do you have any idea how long ago Harpe closed the store?

Jesse E. Harpe closed the business I think about 1985/87. Herb Cromley & Albert were all getting up in age. I got two pair of rosewood N's that old man harpe pulled out of his
desk.Have them on my $175 29 from harpe and 624. Herb died about 4 yrs. age in ellenton in his mid late 80's

To those who have a dust shield, have you ever installed yours? Mine is spring steel of such strength that I cannot spread it wide enough with my fingers to slip it over the slide. To install it, I would have to force it over the slide and it would scratch the heck out of the slide to do so. I have thought about applying enough force to spread it enough to open it up permanently, but I assume the extreme tension is necessary to keep the shield in place when firing so that is probably not a good idea.

What is anyone's experience with installing the dust shield?
