This is sort of tongue-in-cheek, but I really do value everyone's input.

OK, I just did my taxes and was pleased to discover that this year, unlike too many previous years, Uncle Sam owes me money, not the other way around.

So, it's time for another 3rd Generation pistol that I simply can't live without. Problem is, I don't know which model I can't live without! Here's the root of my quandary. I have a good selection of 9mm 3rd Generations (a few used 5906s, a 5946 and a 3913) and one nice 45 ACP (a 4586).

My initial thought is to go for a NIB 5906 so I have a pristine example of that model, but a large part of me is now leaning towards a 4006 as a way to 'round out' my collection of classic 3rd Generation pistols. Since I can get Excellent or NIB examples of both the 5906 and the 4006 from CDNN for about the same price, the cost isn't a factor here.

So what's a guy to do? Why, put up a poll, of course!

Question:
Help BWH spend his tax return! What should he buy next to beef up his collection of S&W 3rd Generation pistols?

Choices:
5906
4006
Something plastic

Well, you have 9mm, you have .45, but no .40 yet...I'd go with the 4006.

I voted for the 5906.

However, since you already have a few 5906s, why not look for a 6906? It's the compact version, but can use 5906 magazines when you want higher capacity. They even make spacers to fill in the missing grip area when using the larger magazines.

Here's a 6904 (blued version of the stainless 6906) with the spacer:

Spacers can be bought from Brownells or ordered directly from S&W. These say they're for the 4013 w/ 4006 magazine, but IIRC, the 5906 and 4006 magazines use identical adapters. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.as...%20adapters&s=#specs

Maybe you should consider a Performance Center model, or maybe a 1006.

I purchased a used " trooper turn in " 4006 about two weeks ago so this is a newbies opinion ( my 1st pistol ). I figure if it was good enough for a State Trooper to depend on it's good enough for me. I like the rugged stainless steel build, she will last a long time. I've shot 90 rounds thru her so far and it performed perfect. Feels good to the hand and with 180gr Georgia Arms ammo shot well.

Well - you have a 4586 - great gun...

I'd say a 4046...

I had one - liked it a lot...just didn't shoot well with it...

I'm kinda locked-in to the .45 and 10mm DAO 3rd Gens myself...

You have the 9mm well represented in your collection, go with the 4006. Or if you think you might want to add another .45... pick up a 4506-1.

Both are excellent guns, I have both, and they make me say "9mm?? What's that?".
