As most are well aware, the Sigma VE's have a funky accessory rail.. From the looks of it, the only thing that's different, is that the "rails" dont run out the end of the frame, like a normal one? It appears it would be pretty easy to take a dremel or something and notch the ends, so they are normal? Anyone know if this has been done, and if so was it successful? Just something I was thinking of since the frame is poly and would be pretty easy to shape.. Here's a small pic of the rail (left box) so you can see what I'm talkin about.. Thanks for your opinions!

You have a concept, but have you checked the dimensions?
Wouldn't it be easier to just get a picatinny adapter? -Greg (a.k.a. Master of the Obvious) NRA Patron Member I was a peripheral visionary. I could see the future, but only way off to the side. -Steven Wright |

When a firearm is fired, it moves to the rear. Anything attached to it (lights, scopes, etc) tend to move forward during this recoil.
Opening up the grooves forward would allow the attachment to slide off during recoil. Most mounting systems with such grooves (1913, Weaver) also have cross slots and bolts to keep the attachment in place. |

Something to remember is that the rail was added to the modern Sigma during the design re-vamp as a means of strengthening the frame. Who knows what messing with it will do?
My advice is to buy a $10 Weaver accessory rail from Midway if you feel that you must hang phazers and strobe lights off your pistol . . . as I did! Shot-placement is king. Adequate penetration is queen. Everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins. And Roze is the princess . . . |

Erich,
Is that a LaserLyte adaptor? Is the light a little loose? I bought one recently since I have many guns that use a standard rail, I already have an M3 light. When I put it on the gun with the adaptor mounted, there is considerable lateral movement. The solution (for now) has been to advance the light a little on the rail so that the retention bar on the light engages one of the rails rather than sitting between them as it would on an M&P, for instance. Any comments? I'm thinking I might get an M4 light for this gun. They're a little cheaper directly from S&W, but it's a bit of a bummer that I can't use the light on anything else. |

Be very careful. The SIGMA rail is like the HK USP rail in that the lights made for it sort of "clamp" into the slots. The reason the slots have ends is so the light won't go sliding off. If you take out the ends, remember you still have to have a cross slot. First, I doubt the dimensions would work and second, even if they did, one of your cross slots will go right through the serial number plate. Now, i don't know about you, but I will use a hand held light instead of going to prison for defacing a serial number. Get the laserlyte adapter - it is only $10.00 or so and will convert the SIGMA rail to Weaver dimensions without permanently modifying the frame. |

Thanks for all the info guys! It was just a thought.. It's the only gun I own with a "rail", so I wasnt aware of the cross slots (and other specs.) needed for most accessories to fit properly..
FWIW, I did see some laser sights and tac lights on ebay a while back that were purpose built for the "Sigma" rail, w/o the need for the adapter.. It was under the Machinist Crib ebay store if anyones interested.. I emailed the seller asking if they had a picture of the laser attached to the gun.. If I get a pic of it mounted I'll post it.. This one looks compact and strong. I first saw it on e-bay. It sells for $60.00

The only bad part about those is that they have to be put on and taken off with an allen wrench. These mounts lack the quick dismount feature of the M4 series lights built specifically for the Sigma. If your gun only going to do house duty or you're going to carry it in a holster molded for a taclight, then I guess that's OK. |
