I looking to buy some more Federal tactical HST hollowpoints, and noticed they carry both the regular flavor and +P. Should I consider the +P in 230 grain for my 4516, or will i experience any adverse effects like excessive recoil or frame battering? thanks for any input!

I'm not a .45 person but why would you need +P in a .45? I bet if you check out the ballistics it will be 50 fps or less. That 3rd gen tank should handle it ok but it will still accelerate the wear if you shoot it a lot. Just my .02

I'd put in an extra-power Wolff recoil spring and go for it!

The small additional pressure you are going to get with a 45 APC+P is going to be minimal-unlike the additional pressures you can get with some other calibers.
The 4516 is an very heavily built gun-unlike the 4513 with its alloy frame. I suspect you could not buy enough +P ammo to wear out a 4516, or if you could, you would wear out shooting it before the gun does. The Islamic Terrorist Express; go directly to Allah, do not pass hell. |

I have shot a fair amount of the Federal .45 ACP 230 grain HST Plus-P loading; it is the issue round at work. I can't tell any difference between it and standard pressure, even when fired side-by-side. The steel frame of the M-4516 is pretty strong. I wouldn't worry about it.
The short barrel of the 4516 cuts down velocity from the standard gun's 5-inch barrel. The Plus-P loading gets some of that back, which will help expansion. Good idea with no drawbacks I can see. |
