First off, thanks again to all those that posted to my 4516 query thread, I appreciate the input! I'm looking for a smaller size carry auto, and was looking at the 4506 and the 6906. I have come to possibly narrowed it down to the latter, as the cost of ammo is cheaper, and with a new baby at home, don't have the extra dough for spendy ammo.

I found a like new in box 6906, looks to be late 80s and early 90s from what i'm told. The reason I think this is so is two-fold: my dealer believes this is correct, and also the pistol has the hooked/squarish trigger guard and the model number is just '6906'

Are we correct that these square-ish trigger guards and '6906' are earlier pistols in the third generation line-up, and does this date range sound about right? Also, are there any negative attributes to these older pistols that I should consider spending the extra money and time to find a new round trigger guard model?

Thanks for any help again, I value your insight!

Doug

The squared trigger guard models were catalogued between 1988 and 1990. Those with the blade type rear sights were early and those with Novak sights were late within the time frame.

Doogy...If you're fortunate to find the Squared Trigger guard and Novak rears, you've just scored my favorite configuration for Smith Autos....The later 3rd Gen pistols were, as I understand, built on better CNC machines and may be a bit more finished, but for me, the Early guns look so much better. Holster makers had a fit with the "hook", and I believe led to the change in the -1 pistols...Here's an example of my Dream Team....Zebulon

FWIW:

I bought a NIB 6906 from CDNN about a month ago. I've owned a 3913 since 1995 and it has been an excellent pistol... Never a problem, absolutely reliable and very accurate.

When I was checking out the 6906 CDNN was selling NIB, w/Lifetime warranty by S&W for $399.95 (or some cents)I wanted one, and when I found out the 6906 is the very same pistol as my favorite 3913 but in double stack I ordered one that day with a spare new 12rd. mag.

I am well pleased with my new 6906.. Glad I bought one while they are still available.

Excellent pistol.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Jesse,

You panned for gold when the river was still fresh with it. I tried this afternoon, and their river ran dry. Oh well, you snooze you lose I guess.

Zebulon,

thanks for the picture, and input! Yeah, I kinda' prefer the square trigger guard look. My father carried one on duty as a detective in the 80s, and it brings back memories. I had a chance to look at a NIB 6906 the other day from around '88. The CNC work looked great, and it was certainly brand new. I may pull the trigger, as it felt great in hand!

BTW, how did you have the custom machining work done on the ejection port that is shown?

thanks!

Doug

Hi Doug....I sent all my barrels to T. Mark Graham at Arizona Response Systems to have them polished and jeweled and crowned. From the Chamber to within a half inch of the muzzle was done in Satin Black Metacol III.....Mark is a Master......Thanks for the compliment on his work.....Zeb

Zebulon,

I see the jeweling on the chamber but I don't see where it was Metacol'd.

Sorry you missed out on these 6906's, but I'm sure there are retail gun dealers all over America who scarfed them up for $399.99 and are selling them for $499.99 or more...

Apparently they still have some 5906's..

Best Wishes,

Jesse

P.S. Shouldn't that have been "a shot of red-eye"?

Hi Presspics....The Metacol III (Satin Black) starts at the muzzle end of the chamber and runs to the last 1/2" of the barrel...You can't see it because it's hidden under the slide. I don't have the Smiths anymore or I would take some pics for you....I had all my Sigs done the same way....MAYBE, and I don't want to put this on Mark...ask to see if he bothered to take any pics himself. He probably did 8 pistols for me in the same way....Mark is an awesome guy to have in your corner.....Zebulon
