If you don't own one, why don't you call S&W customer service and ask? If you do, please check your owners manual.

Or, look a little further down the page for Erich's thread on the Sigma subject. A whole lot of Middle Eastern security forces are carrying Sigmas and presumably using NATO/STANAG spec ammo. This is at least as stout as +P.

You can download user manuals for every current Smith & Wesson firearm from S&W's website.

The overwhelming majority of your questions wil be answered in one fell swoop.

Las armas son necesarias
Pero nadie sabe cuando;
Asi no, si andas paseando,
Y de noche sobre todo,
Debes llevarlo de modo
Que al salir, salga cortando.

Yes. A steady diet of them will likely accelerate wear.

I certainly have, with no issues. +P+, too - which are what're in the Sigma that I'm wearing as I type this. Smiler

I shoot 9mm+P in all my S&W 9's. I change my recoil springs regularly, and haven't had a problem yet. Regards 18DAI.

The SW9VE seems to have a very beefy barrel compared to a lot of the other 9mm pistols out there.

Wasn't the Sigma line originally designed around the .40S&W cartridge, not the 9mm ,like GLOCK's and XD's were? I always figured this made it extra beefy for the 9mm configuration.

Yes. The original Sigma was a .40 with a
4.5 inch barrel, instead of the present 4 inch.
Yep, it's my opinion that the Sigma is probably
fairly strong. After all, it can also handle the
.357 SIG, which I think runs a bit more pressure
than the .40S&W. So I can see it handling some
pretty stout 9mm stuff fairly well.
The manual says not to use +P+, but the ones
using it for the 9mm are not having trouble by
what I see.
For the .40, you are pretty much stuck to P+
only I think. I would not want to use anything
more stout than that in a .40 myself just to be
on the safe side.
The manual seems to indicate P+ is ok being it's
a modern pistol, but they say no +P+.
I suppose anyone using that would be doing so at
their own risk.. :/
So anyway, that S&W is using that frame for
.357 SIG tells me it's probably fairly stout,
and could probably handle some really stout 9mm
loads. I wouldn't want to get too carried away
with the .40 though. But that's just me..

Dumb question: is there enough advantage in the 9mm +P and the +P+ to make it worth using?
Erich, I know from reading your posts over time that you like to load and shoot some pretty hot stuff, but would it really make a difference?

It can, but I guess depends on all the various
factors in the situation. Most police seemed to
use pretty hot ammo when they were running 9mm.
As far as my situation, which is more 4 leg
protection vs 2 leg, a hot .40 load can make
quite a difference if say I was going up against
a large mean animal.
But as far as the .40, there really is no +P rating per say, as there are no specifications
set for it.
But I see +P ammo listed for sale, and it is
hotter than stock ammo, so I guess they are
bumping into +P territory without an official
guide to do so.
I was commenting about the hot 180 gr loads for
the .40, but I found an even better one last
night, if I had to go against a big animal.
Double tap is selling a 200 gr supposably +P
load with a flat WFNGC cast slug that is claimed
to do appx 1050 fps with a 4 inch barrel.
That rates a "12" on the Taylor scale, and is
probably about my bet bet against large hogs,
etc. I might buy a few of those to keep around.
So anyway, yea, I think it can make a difference, but it probably shows up more when
you have marginal conditions for the event..
IE: trying to pop a 300-400 lb wild hog with a
.40 automatic.. :/
For just self defense, it's probably overkill,
but again just depends on the conditions at the
time.
The .40 is stock loaded a lot closer to it's
pressure limits than the average 9mm. So I have
no problems using stock ammo for lesser problems
that might come up, like say a 2 legged animal.
Just my 2c worth... MPG will vary..
