I have the 4040PD and I'm glad I got one. It is a blast to shoot and can carry. Not many carry guns out there that are also fun to shoot on range. I enjoyed shooting it as much as my SW1911... ok almost. I'm keeping this one.

I don't mourn the demise because I've got one. It is my favorite carry piece. Flat, lite, totally reliable and it shoots like a dream for me.

local gun shop has one...and after heavey dickering.. I was only able to get him down to $610 so I passed...and wound up down the road spotting a used/mint CS40 for under $400..made my deicsion easy...the 404PD I think is slimmer..and certainly with the Scandium, a but lighter for conceal it'd be a great gun and was my first choice when shopping...but I have big hands and the CS40 feels great to me...moreof a problem to conceal...but I am proud to own the CS...not sure why Smith is having troubles marketing a good sub40...if I coulda bought the local 4040pd for about $500 new...I would have been thrilled...as it is.. I feel like I've gotten a new CS40 and am very happy with the price/value point...

I found a distributor with seven of these 4040PDs still in stock.

To be honest, it does look like a neat gun. I can't see why there was a lack of interest in it.

Whoa, older thread brought back to life.Wink

Since my previous posting I picked up a 4040PD for a price that was just simply too good to pass up. Smiler Don't ask me how much, because I'd be too embarrassed to say ... but it was right place, right time. Smiler

Great little pistol. Same overall size as my 3913, but as you might imagine, it has more felt recoil and 'snap'.

While I also would've appreciated the slide being machined from stainless, but back when I asked if a stainless model was planned at some point it was explained to me that the original purpose of the PD line was to offer basic 'personal defense' models, and that marketing research indicated this meant black, non-reflective finishes. Also, S&W had a lot of other new projects pending and a stainless model of the 4040 just wasn't on anyone's drawing board at that time.

Granted, a Melonite QP nitriding treatment would've provided an attractive black finish (and increased the surface strength & corrosion resistance, as well as reducing rolling friction), but it also would've added up to about $100 to the cost of the finished pistol (the process is done by an outside vendor). The Scandium frame being used had already raised the cost of the model quite a bit.

I found it interesting that the slide was already machined to accept the optional spring-loaded, decock-only assembly, though. This is something that's usually only been done on the TSW's.

I've found my 4040PD to be a fine .40 S&W compact, although it does naturally offer more felt recoil than my 3913, with some additional muzzle whip, even compared to when I'm using +P+ loads in my 3913. The dual, non-captured, nested recoil springs used in the 4040 are the same used in the 4013TSW/4513TSW/457.

Nice pistol. Glad I picked one up before they dried up.

From what I've been told, it was simply 'less than great' timing for a more expensive .40 S&W compact to be introduced. The CS40 hadn't done as well as the CS9/CS45, and was discontinued. Then, S&W already had the 4013TSW, SW99/990L compacts and the pending M&P compact due in the near future. Nobody has ever had anything negative to say about the model when I've discussed it with different folks at the factory, and most have thought that it was model that had deserved more of chance, but the increased cost and less expensive competition simply caused its demise. Too bad.

I'll be keeping mine ...

Does the 4040PD have the double recoil spring set-up like the 4013TSW?

I am a gun store. I'm not cruising forums trying too boost business. I joined some forums to learn about certain guns to see what's in and what's out. I'm still kind of new to this business and still learning. I just ran across this thread and I wondered too about the 4040PD. I checked with a distributor of mine and they have seven left. Looks like they want to blow these out of their inventory. I also checked with Maryland and this gun is not approved for sale in MD. So I can only sell to out of state buyers and ship to the FFL of your choice. Anyone still interested?

Sounds good. Still learning how to use this forum too or I'd have people PM me or something. Doesn't look like S&W Forum does that or am I missing it? So many different programs. Anyway, my work email is:

richsgrocerysportsshop@adelphia.net

Thank you.

Edit: Figured it out, added my email to my profile.
