Keep looking. I bought a new in the box 4040PD tonight from Gander Mountain for 395 dollars.

Hey, great price. Congrats. Just barely undercut what I paid for one. Wink

Nice enough compact .40 S&W, although the felt recoil is noticeable. Considering the light weight, slim design and grip profile, though, that's not really surprising.

Has anyone ever tried to fit the delrin grips from the 3913 to the 4040?
Like the CS9, the 4040PD feels great in my hand but it would be nice if less sticky, less bulky grips could be used.

Malph, I never tried 3900 grips on the 4040 that I had but IIRC the Hogues it comes with are exactly the same as the ones for the 3900s. I suspect they would fit. If you want a used set of 3900 Delrin grips to tinker with, e-mail me.

I put the 3913 OEM grips on the 4040PD I owned. They fit fine. I only had them on for a short time, before putting the Hogues back on, as the Delrin, or Xenoy grips made the 4040PD to "slippery", for me, when shooting the snappier 40 round.

Does Hogue offer their "recheckered" grips for S&W semis like the ones they have for Sigs?
Those recheckered grips are not as slippery.

No, more's the pity, but with a little careful work you can stipple Smith factory Delrin for a better gripping surface:

I own quite a few different handguns, and I'm thinking about just leaving it in the box, and not even shooting it. I would imagine it will be a rather rare handgun in 25-30 years.

Might be.

I think the cost of the Scandium aluminum alloy frame priced it out of the compact market. Too easy to buy a competing polymer-framed gun. S&W was its own competitor, too, with the less expensive (to produce) SW99/990L's on the shelves and the M&P 40 compact waiting in the wings.

I was told that when they were first introduced, it took several months for the factory be able to catch up and fill dealer orders for the 4040PD.

I just picked mine up because I had the chance to get one for great deal, and I thought it would be nice to have the .40 S&W 'equivalent' of the 3913.

Best regards. Wink

Shorty, I received those 39xx series grips from you and put them on my 4040PD. Thanks again. They fit fine! As you would imagine, they make the gun easier to hide/less bulky/sticky but slightly harder to shoot as you really have to hang on to that sucker. It wants to move in your hands under recoil. Two-handed shooting is not bad but one-handed drills are tough. At least for me.

Now the bad news. About two-hunder rounds into todays shooting session, the gun broke. I am still not quite sure what is going on with it. I the trigger pull seems/feels normal but the gun will not fire. Not sure what is going on. I guess I am going to have to send it back to Smith. I've had several problems with this gun including, a magazine that just sort disintegrated under recoil, occasional problems with the slide not locking back after the last round is fired from the magazine and now this. It is too bad because I really like the format/size of the gun. A .40 cal with the size, feel and manual safety of the 3913 series. I have about lost confidence in this thing though. Not sure if the .40 is just too much for what is basically a 39xx or if I just got a lemon. When the gun is working it is a heck of a nice piece however. Quite easy to pack and easy enough to shoot.

You are quite welcome. They are a bit more slippy than the Hogues, aren't they? Wink

Sorry to hear about your problems with the 4040. It certainly is worth sending back to the factory to fix because, as you say, when it is working it is a heck of a nice piece. Good luck with it.

I haven't carried mine in quite some time. I'm considering selling it. What would be the best way to sell this?

How did you stipple those grips?

Very carefully with a conical tip in a woodburning/leatherworking iron. Some folks use a soldering iron. It's pretty much the same system people use for Glocks or any other polymer surface. The pattern you get depends on the tip you use. The grips should be on the gun when you work on them and I have found it best to tape or rubber band them down to keep the heat from warping them. It's not difficult, just takes some time and patience.
