I just bought a nice used Model 39-2 and I could use some spare mags. Factory mags are expensive and I'd rather not buy Pro-Mag junk. According to legend S&W copied the P-38 magazine when designing the Model 39 and added a hole for the catch. I wonder if anyone has tried to modify a P-1/P-38 mag to work in a M39 or is there some other difference that would keep it from functioning?

I expect that if you shop around, you can find better prices than MSRP. Dunno about the "copy" idea, first I've heard of it. You also don't know just how close a copy

I have never used a Pro-Mag in a 39, but I have over 20 that I use in my Sig 229 and I have never had any kind of problem. I hear the ones for the 39's are ok. You might try CDNN for factory mags.

Whereas it MAY be possible to modify a P38 mag...is it that much cheaper to try? I routinely find original 39 mags that I know will work. If it is that much less money I guess I would obtain a P38 mag and do some serious measuring between them. I am interested in learning what you found out however...

I have Promags and they work but I reserve them for range mags.
