I've heard recoil buffers are recommended for full size [5"] 1911s. Is the same true for Commander size [4"] 1911s like the #108283 ?

Buffer 101: Wilson, for example is big on buffers and builds his guns specifically for them.
Others do not, and you have to be sure the gun will accomodate a buffer. If the spring goes solid in recoil because of the buffer, it can cause serious damage. Gun/spring/buffer have to work together as a system. I have one 1911 that wil not even lock back if you put a buffer in it.

If your gun uses buffers, it requires replacing them before they come apart and jam the gun. Also, using a buffer is no substitute for changing the recoil spring when needed.

A shock buff should never be used on a 1911 smaller than 5 inch. It will seriouslly affect the dynamics of the pistol.

I just recently watched an American Gunsmithing Institute video on the 1911 with Robert Dunlap. His take on buffers was ok for practice, but not on your self defense weapon. The chance of failure at a critical moment was not worth it. I wonder what John Browning would think? Bruce

Btw I will not put one on my Commander. It works perfectly without one.

I have used them for years on my Gold Cup and it works fine. However, I have tried on my Commander and it will not lock back.

Thanks for the insights.......
I thought a buffer was suppose to prevent slide and/or frame damage especialy with an alloy frames. If that is not the case I probably don't need to use one. I was thinking about using a buffer during the 200-300 round break in period and possibly during practice but not for carry. I wasn't aware a buffer would cause a noticable change in the shooting dynamics of the pistol.

J.B. is rolling in his grave just cause the topic came up.

Your supposed to replace springs when they are bad.

And use the appropriate spring with the ammo your shooting.

IMO, a buffer, like a full-length recoil spring guide rod, is the answer to a question no one was asking. A proper spring should prevent frame battering and, as already noted, a buffer has serious potential to create more problems than it could ever solve.

I have used them on a 5" for years. just a target gun, not a duty carry.

now that we are approved for 1911 carry, I find myself putting one in my Springfield Operator duty carry.

not really worried about it as I have never had one break or crumble in a gun. Plus I am too anal and always field stripping and checking/lubing so it gets replaced when it looks worn.

I also have one in my Officers ACP with a Kings guide rod. have never had an issue, however I am preparing to put this one on the street for plain clothes duty carry and will put some rounds down range in the are of 200 plus and check it before it goes 10-8.

or another solution, buffs for practics, no buffs for duty. I dont think JB would mind some technology padding. Razzer

BINGO!!!

I'll never use a buffer...and I'll never wear out my 1911s.

Would not use a buffer on a 1911 with a barrel less than 5 inches. I used the Wilson Shok Buff Kit on a Colt 1911 (Enhanced Model from the 1990s) in 38 Super. Worked great.
