I say get the .40 because its not a 9mm
but seriously get whatever you want, 9mm cost less and gives you one more round, .40 makes a bigger hole, just decide whats important to you. |

.40 for the punch and for the price of ammo it really is not that bad for practice with it. If I want to shoot alot out comes the .22

The ammo price difference is there,
but not as bad as it could be. IE: I was considering a used .44 special, and comparing at one popular site, using blazer ammo as a comparison, .44 special FMJ 200 gr is 29 bucks a box of 50.. Ouch.. That gave me 2nd thoughts about the .44 special, despite how well I like that caliber. At that site, 9mm is 12.00 for 50, and .40 S&W is 14.00. So two bucks more a box of 50 at the moment at that place. .45 ACP is 16.00. So anyway, it could be worse for the .40.. There seem to be more deals on .40 vs some of the other larger calibers, probably because it's been so popular lately. Anyway, being mine is for defense, more likely animals rather than crooks, I wanted as much horsepower I could get and went the .40 vs the 9mm. 2-3 bucks extra per 50 wasn't enough to make me go the 9mm. I'll feel more comfortable going against say a wild hog or dog with the .40. I would have gone .45 ACP if they made a sigma that caliber.. Two more bucks a box, but just that much more stop power with those heavier wider slugs. 44 special ammo. :/ |

I voted for the 9mm. The Sigma seems like a great gun for the price and of the centerfire calibers, the 9mm seems to be most common one to find at a reasonable price pretty anywhere you can buy ammo.
With the right ammo, the performance of the 9mm and .40S&W is very close and you should pick the caliber you shoot the best. I carried a .40 for a long time and shot it very well. Once I switched to the 9mm, I realized that I shot it even better and once I could chose my own sidearm and caliber, I stuck with the 9mm for that reason. I would rather hit with the 9mm than miss with the .40. |

Modraker, if you are looking at a Sigma I assume you are looking at one because they are a tremendous value right now and not because they are the latest greatest pistol on the scene. That said, 9mm, it is a good CC round or home defense round and it is cheap, so its easier to practice. I have two Sigma 9's one is my wifes and one is mine. I also have a 1911. But the Sigma is better for carry. If money isn't a issue buy something else. Not because Sigma's are bad, just that there are better choices out there.

I bought the SW9VE to take advantage of the cheap 9mm at the time. I enjoyed shooting it so much that I bought a SW40VE that same evening.
I'd start with the 9mm and get the 40 if you really like the platform. On paper the energy statistics may look similar, but bigger holes are better than smaller holes and heavier projectiles have better momentum. -Greg (a.k.a. Just bought one today (9 mm)or rather left a deposit as the dealer sold out (more arriving on Monday) on sale for $339.00 less S&W $50.00 rebate and 2 free 16 round mags.
I chose 9mm as I needed an inexpensive to shoot car gun. I couldn't see leaving my shorty 9 or shorty 40 in the car. |

let's see, I have 3 9's and 2 40's...... I think it's important to have even numbers so if I spring for a Sigma it has to be a 9.

It's good to see this old thread again. Since my last posting I have started reloading. Without buying bulk components, I can load a box of 50 .40 caliber for about $6. That price does not include brass which I have gotten from previously purchased factory rounds.

Hey Modraker, I had a Glock 19C and I now carry a Sigma40gve,I have to say the Glock wasn't to bad, but I like my S&W 40 better, sweet gun and I've had no problems with mine, and the ammo is only a couple bucks more than a 9mm. I like what Gmchenry said: Bigger holes are better than smaller holes!

Since I posted the 9mm vs. .40 poll, I have purchased a .40 because I want the extra stopping power. I do find that a box of .40s is more than just a couple of bucks more expensive than a box of 9's. So my next purchase will a be a Sigma 9mm. I wholeheartedly agree with those who recommend buying both calibers.
