Well folks, I have decided that the 5906 that I bought in about 1995 is due to come out of the gun safe.
I have been a die hard with my 686's, 629's, 625's and (dare I say...) Glocks. Figuring that I have more than enough testostorone with a 7 1/2" 629 Stealth Hunter and a 300gr bullet, I will try my hand at reloading the itsy bitsy 115gr 9mm. What the heck. I might even like it. The 5906 fits nicely in my hand... I just have to get used to that danged safety. I just noticed, this is my 500th post! DJ: Just do like I do... Leave the safety off, and depend on the heavier DA first round trigger pull as you would a revolver. I like the option of the external safety because it makes my wife feel "warm and fuzzy" and our 5906 is our home defense, "get me to the 12ga." pistol. Accuracy provided by the Crimson Trace Lasergrips compliment the inherent reliability and overall performance of the fine all steel 5906. Over the years, I have taken 2 different NIB guns out of the safe - and to the range for their baptism .....and enjoyed every minute of it. The anticipation is a killer. I hope you savor the experience. A 5906 would be a fun one to break in. Enjoy!

I carried one in a Hoyt rear-rake holster for awhile on patrol in Hollywood (Ca). I sold it for a 6906 when I made Detective. Great duty pistol.

I had the hots for a 5906 until one day I ran across a 99% 5903 from the early 90s on consignment at a local gun shop. Once I wrapped my hand around it, I was sold . . . it was, too . . . to me. It's a beauty. IMHO, it has all the advantages of the 5906 without what I consider to be the disadvantage of weight. A 9mm does not have to weight that much.
I would still buy a 5906 if the condition was 98% or better and the price was very, very good. It's just that now I'm not on the "hunt" for one.   |

DD: CDNN is selling 'em all day long NIB w/one mag and a lifetime warranty for $399.99..... FWIW I use my 5906 w/CT's on it for my "home defense pistol of choice, but when I want capacity and less weight for cc I just stick a 5906 mag. As was mentioned above use the decocker/safety for a decocker not a safety. With the safety off and hammer down the 5906 is as safe if not safer than your revolvers. The 115gr is all right for the range but 124 gr +p of serious work.

I live in California. The 5906 is not on the DOJ's list of approved handguns for sale in California. I cannot bring one in from out of state or buy one "used" from a dealer (i.e., not from his inventory). I can, however, buy one via a private party sale and as a consignment firearm from a local gun shop. As you can see, we here in California are pretty much at the mercy of local gun shop consignments and private party purchases at gun shows. That's why collecting 3rd generation pistols here is more challenging than in other parts of the country. It is also why prices are generally higher. |

DD: I always shake my head when I read of another stupid Kalifornia rule.. Crap, you'd think the old 5906 would be approved in a heartbeat.. No logic involved, just anti-gunners at the helm.. remat: Unless you are just "into" used guns I would suggest you spring for the little extra cost and buy one of the NIB 5906's.. I don't know if the used trade-in's have the lifetime warranty, but the NIB pistols will have. The price of the new 5906's is only $399.00 so it's not that much difference in price between the used and the new pistols. Not trying to mind your business, just a suggestion. New is good... You won't regret it. I did the same thing a year or so ago with a 4006 I had tucked away. As I saw the values of the PD guns continue to go down, I figured what the heck would it hurt to shoot the thing?? I have never looked back, what a sweet shooter!! I also have a 5903 (lightweight version of your 5906) that I have been shooting for years, and I am sure you will be pleased with your 5906. Enjoy.
