I just acquired a NIB 4506 and cannot wait to get to the range with it. Any 4506 fans care to offer any opinions?

It's a terrible gun and you need to get rid of it ASAP. I'm down in Fayette County. I'll be glad to relieve you of your burden
Large, heavy, indestructable, accurate (with the right loads). I regretted selling mine the moment I handed it over. Magazines can be a wee bit problematic. S&W went through (I think) three magazine follower designs before getting it right. Yellow, orange and black in that order. If your magazines don't have black followers, and the pistol exhibits some feeding hiccups, call S&W and order new followers. I found that was all the 'tweaking' needed to get mine to run 100%. Good luck! You've got a dandy pistol there. "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!" |

I love my 4506, I got it about 1 and a 1/2 months ago. I had some concerns about wear on the slide, but all my concerns have been laid to rest. as far as the range goes this gun is a beaut. ive got a sig ,r. p90 super redhawk 44 and a few others and overall this is my favorite pistol. ive had no problems and my clips have the yellow followers. ive only put maybe 500 rounds through it but so far ive only had 1 jam and i do believe it was due to a bad round. the casing had serious gouges around the rim how i missed this ill never know but i honestly believe these are flawless firearms.

You've joined the ranks of some very satisfied people. I've had my 4506-1 since September last year and it is hands down the best DA semi-auto I've owned.
I've fed it a variety of ammo (different bullets weights & loadings, my reloads) and no hiccups. It came with the factory straight grips, I tried the factory arched grips which felt better but did not fill my hand enough. I recently tried the Hogue grips and they work great. Here's a pic before I put the Hogue's on: Conrad ------ NRA Endowment Member S&WCA # 1830 "Political correctness is a doctrine that is fostered by a delusional & illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous, ignorant mainstream media, to convince people that a turd is not a turd, but something that is entirely possible to pick up by the clean end." |

Yep, it does. I'm curious, where did you get yours? I purchased this one from a forum member who is a LEO that has a connection in the Fresno SO that sold it to him. I've had my 4506-1 for about 2 1/2 months now and absolutely love it. I go to the range almost every weekend and fire a minimum of 100 rounds each time. I have never had any issues with it at all. It fires anything I feed thru it without even so much as a hiccup. The only issue I did have was finding a holster for it as it is my primary carry weapon. I did get lucky about 3 weeks ago at a local gun show and found a Don Hume concealment holster for $32 that works really well. It holds it up tight against my body and considering the size and weight of the gun, it is actually pretty well concealed.

I rented one about 10 years ago. 1st shot went right through the "X" about 10 yards out. The rest stayed right around the middle.
I remember the 4506 felt 'better' to me than the Sig P220 I had rented previously. I never followed up and bought one, but it is in my 'bucket' list. |

Thanks for the comments and pics. I've been wanting one for a long time, but something else always came up. I paid about $650 OTD for mine, which is NIB.

So does any 4506 owner here actually SWITCHED to the big SMith over a 1911 for feed reliability, and performance?
the reason I ask is this: The Smith is big, but still as flat. the 1911s have quirks, but the 4506 seems to have a great history for feed reliability. I find this the overall factor in carrying a gun full time. I do not recall anyone ever saying the SMith needs a "200-rd break-in" period. The 1911s are either tight, needs shaving in of the fitted bushing, etc. So, I am curious as to your preference of carry over the 1911, once you saw your 4506 in action. Not saying the 4506 is superior to the 1911 or other bashing (the SA trigger can never match the 1911's crispness). Just wondering who made the choice to CARRY the 4506 over a 1911, due to general feeding performance. I carry a Defensive-Firearm because I never want to be held hostage, and have no tools available to eliminate the threat. Cherish the Love one receives in Life. |

I have tried many 45's 1911, sig, glock, ruger and THE 4506. The 4506 carrries like a 1911, weight and size are similar. I havent got totally used to the trigger but it hasnt had a malfunction yet. After owning and shooting this 4506 I think Smiths get a bum reputation from the Gun magazines. I think they are just as good if not better than the others. Remeber a hangun is intended for defensive use at less than 15 yds. Why do you need a $2500 gun for that distance when you can get a very reliable and accurate 4506? I am glad I have kept this one.

Well having owned and carried 1911's since the mid 60's I will take a S&W 3rd gen anytime over a 1911 for sure.
This is my 1006 and is what was used to build the 4506 from and it is dead reliable and shoots where pointed and just as consealable as a 1911. I have gotten rid of my 1911's and will most likely never own another unless it be a 10mm range gun. This is my only 45ACP gun nowdays and it shoots everything and far more reliable then a 1911 and replaced my 1911 officers model.
