My 4506 no dash is a great pistol. The best shooting .45 I have. A couple of years ago I sent it back to S&W for a complete re-work, action job, and night sights. Talk about sweet now!

Ole Wild-What did the action job entail? Was it worth it. I have a 4506-1 I started with a 1006 and wish I would have kept it - I do like the 10mm !

They lightened the DA trigger pull substantially and made it smoothe as butter. BY far the best DA I've ever felt on a pistol. SA breaks nice at little over 3 lbs with very little over travel. Yep...it was worth the money, too me anyway. I had bought the pistol for $300. Had S&W refinish, put all new springs, do the action job, install night sights and even fitted a new barrel. Cost was about $250 including shipping. I've been offered $650 for it, but no way I'd sell.

I think you have the provenance reversed there. Didn't the 4506 beget the 1006, not the other way around?

I sold my 4506 when I decided I wanted to try a revolver. I regretted it almost immediately. Then I found the 4516, and never looked back. All of the 3rd gen 45s I've handled seemed to have great reliability and better than average accuracy.

Mine has visited Novak's shop and had the magic pixie dust sprinkled on it. Anyone who tries it is amazed at the DA trigger feel.

Mr. Ole Wild -

Will you please direct me to a phone # or person at SW who can discuss a refrub on my 4506? My 4506 no dash (TCD 4600) is a well used, but not abused PD trade-in. I was told that it was a range gun and it shows it. It cleaned up pretty good, but a trip to SW for refurb is what it really needs.

Thanks and best regards,

The Gila Bender

I haven't carried an 4506 since my LEO days, and when I had the chance I picked up instead a 4566, I just think the 4566 is a little more slick than the 4506. As far as having to make a choice I'd take a 4506 or 4566 or 4516 over a 1911 any day.

After I bought my first gun last year (625-8 w/5" bbl) I started looking for a 1911 to go with it. During the course of my research I "stumbled" on the 4506 and when I found out it was one of the Miami Vice guns I knew that I was not getting a 1911 anytime soon! I was lucky enough to find a 4506 no-dash thank you in the local newspaper for $450.00. It's about 90% but who cares because this baby just exists to be shot not shown. I've put well over 500 rds. thru her without a single problem and she's dead-on at 50' thanks to the adjustable sights. When I'm not shooting her I'm thinking about shooting her, I will never ever sell this gun, even cleaning her is fun! She's just that sexy! The action job by S&W definitely sounds interesting tho and I know she's worth it. My next day off is Friday and anybody want to hazard a guess what my plan will be?

Thank you, Mr. Ole Wild.

I called SW today and will ship my ol' 4506 out for refurb.

Gotta tell you guys something, though. After seeing these "Fresno" 4506's I'm on the hunt for nice one.

Love my 4506! Smiler But, being rather short and a little rounder than I should be.... made it kind of hard to carry. So I picked up a 4566 for CCW! Just have to echo the comments about feeding anything. After carrying 3 Gen guns for quite a while, in 9, 40 & 45, I think they are possibly the most reliable semi auto I've come across!

I think Fresno Co Sheriff has or is in process of swapping out the 4506's for the 4566. I have not confirmed this. I will be in Fresno next week and will try and find out.

My 2 cents (worth less with this inflation):

I'm issued one, and carry it on duty ( I don't have a choice). For seven years and change now. The best thing about it is that you can drop it in the mud and it'll still shoot- seen it happen. And as long as those mags and springs are good, it won't jam (one of ours was in a running fire fight and his jammed- mag spring was the problem- didn't keep him from putting down the bad guy). Isn't ammo finicky like a Sig. It's heavy (see below), so you can use it as a hammer around the house. On the other hand, if you stroke someone with it, they tend to obey commands immediately- unconsciousness tends to equal compliance.

On the downside- it's ungodly heavy. And getting holsters and accessories for it are a little hard- they're not commonly stocked by many LEO supply stores (unlike the Glocks and Sigs and Berettas). It only holds 8+1, whereas even compact .45's can hold 10. Also, use caution in cleaning it- that little spring, I think it's the trigger return spring, will break in a heartbeat.

I've had a trigger polish up (as much as allowed) and it certainly shoots acceptably and accurately. There are better guns, but if you have to own a S&W auto pre M&P, then I would own this one.

This is a little off topic perhaps but I was wondering what the general guidelines are for keeping loaded magazines, ie; how long before they get too slack, or how long should the spring last? I'd hate to find out too late with a bad feed etc.!

Guys, I found a Fresno. 4506 no dash in VG condition. Seller says it appears that it either lived in the armory or had a desk job, that is, no evidence of holster wear or field use. We'll see....

Photo,

My Smith rep -- who's a bigwig there now -- told me to periodically "decompress" all my magazines for a day or two when you're not carrying the gun and just around the house.

I'd get the best quality springs I could find -- probably Wolf -- and replace them every couple of years -- just to be on the safe side.

In addition, on my 1006, I rotate mags -- and sometimes leave each mag one round shy of full...
