I think you are supposed to but someone who knows will chime in. I think rimfires are the ones you don't want to dryfire.
Welcome to the forum. I noticed you are from Florida. I grew up in Central Florida and boy do I miss it.

jameskellogg01, Welcome to the forum from another citizen of the hurricane state. It won't hurt to dry fire your M-642, mine has been dry fired thousands of times over the last 5 years. However some folks who worry about such things use snap caps just to hedge their bet; they run about $4 each. MOONDAWG
