Why do new J-Frame S&W revolvers NOT say Made in USA?

I am wondering is this because of a BATFE ruling OR is the component and materials no longer gurratteed to be of sufficient US origin?

I just bought a 642-2, Ser # DBU8xxx on 3-6-08 and it has the two line address on the right side of the frame. The top line states SPFLD,MA and the bottom line states S&W USA.

BTW I love this little gun!

The address is for the S&W Company, NOT where they are made. Have they been, possibly, outsourced?????? I have not heard anything about this. Nowadays.....anything is possible!!! Roll Eyes Bob

ATF ruling mixed with cost reduction. It has nothing to do with foreign content, it's about money.

S&W switched to laser etching on aluminum frame revolvers and the ATF ruled that the markings had to be at least .003" deep. When they tried that depth, the four line address melted together. That's why S&W changed to the two line address, no other reason. ALL S&W handguns are made in the USA.

See page 172, SCSW #3.

"Made in USA" and "USA" have the same meaning, according to the FTC. Check it out...

Since Osama Bin Laden bought out S&W, I think I heard they were now being built in Dubai by Indonesian indentured servants.

It's true. It's one of the few products where lead content wasn't an issue. Big Grin

Good one. If it says it on the internet, it must be true.

OK you guys, STOP IT!
I may injure myself laughing.
Besides, everyone knows S&Ws are now made in India and Pakistan by off-duty Microsoft technical support people!
