Circa 1980, per the SCS&W 3rd Edition.

Enjoy your new M29!

You will enjoy your 29-2 with the long barrel. It dates to late 1980 to early 1981.

Welcome to the Forum. I recommend buying Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. Well worth the money and a great source of information including DOB of your guns!

This is a very good suggestion BUT you need to remember that this book like any other is simply a guide line and only a Factory Letter will tell you the details. Consecutive serial numbered guns had been known to ship many years apart - 2, 3 or even Fourteen!!!

I just bought it from the second owner. When I took the grips off, they had a 1984 date. Does this make any sense, or did someone switch the grips?

I would think the stocks have been switched as is often done since target stocks were not numbered to the revolver (except in a few isolated cases).
