My 617 is a 4" 6 Shot No Dash..
I have tried alot of different ammo & now use the Federal 550 Bulk packs from Wally World because of price & it's cleaner because of the Copper washed coating.. This ammo runs great in just about every 22 I've tried it in, Ruger MKII, 10/22, Remington Nylon 66..
Bye the Way my 617 will shoot the center of the target out & is the most accurate Revolver I've ever Fired.. Glad I picked this one up..
It's Just as Good, Maybe Better, than My 6 7/8" Slabside Ruger MKII, It's Become My #1 Range Companion.. Sorry Ruger! Wink

going to give it a complete test soon. Try different ammo. ANYBODY EVER INSTALL A HIZ VIZ FRONT SIGHT ON ONE OF THESE???? COULD BE MY eyes, find it hard to focus in the sun, glare off the barrel. As far as trades, already have a 17 6 shot, and just getting too much hassel and expense unless its face to face.

zippo: .. It may be the grips more than anything. Just a thought. .

As far as ammo goes, I've been staying clear of 22 hollow point even if it's cheaper. H/P won't feed properly through my old Winchester pumps and noticed they can be difficult loading in my 18-3. Some are a little tight in and tight out.

Have been buying my ammo at Wally World lately . . . Winchester Wildcat in value pack of 500. They're R/N and they go in and they go out perfectly. Also use the Federal equivalent with equal success. . Smiler

You cannot take too seriously the advice about 22s being ammo particular. I would buy a variety of bullets you plan to afford for the gun and then approach it as if you were using a rest. Foul the barrel with 5 shots off target of each bullet and then ten into a target. Then try another and so on.

617 & K18 or K17 from 1954 here...

...most 22 ammo seems to misfire at least once or twice during a range session. I don't worry about it. I just go around one more time and 50% of the time it ignites. After that...off to the recycle bin.

25 feet is CLOSE. I'd let someone else shoot it. It outa do at least that well from a solid rest at 25 yards.

When somebody asks me what I want for Christmas, I say "22 LR ammo". So I have a variety. Sunday I tried:

Win Dynapoint
Rem Thunderbolt
Federal Value pak HP
Rem Viper
CCI Stingers
Rem High Vel HP
Federal Champion
Eley Tenex
Eley Club
Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match
Win Wildcats

So, you can see there was quite an assortment. None of it was remarkable, 5-6" fo a ten shot group. Only the Fed GMUM went into 3 3/4". It was some left over from my smallbore silhoutte days.

I'm going to mount a scope, check out local stores for diferent ammo, and play some more.

Any suggestions?

John

I have the 617 4 inch and 6 inch. I love both of them. I use a trio of 625,686 and 617 for shooting with red dot sights.

I did have one problem accuracy problem with my 6" 617 one time. I was shooting some non-copper coated ammo and the forcing cone became extremely fouled. It was keyholing at 10'!

I cleaned out the bore (and a piece of lead about 1/16"x3/16" fell out of the forcing cone with the first pass of the bore brush!) and test fired it with copper coated ammo the next day. I haven't had a problem since.

I'd say clean the hell out of your bore and try some copper coated ammo.

Results of the 1998 Massachusetts gun laws:

It is important to keep in mind the ISP reports show that firearm related homicides decreased 56% from 1994 to 1998.

From 1998 to 2002, firearm related homicides increased 48%. During the same time, firearm related accidental deaths have increased 200%.

Will work for ammo.

Thanks for all the advice, especially try a scope.

Its my 55 year old eyes, not the 617. Put a burris 2x fine cross hair on it. Used American Eagle copper plated 38 grain High Velocity.

SHOT A HOLE LESS THAN 1/4 in diameter at 20 yards. THIS THING CAN SHOOT THE ANTENNA OFF A ROACH !! Thanks to all for keeping me from making a mistake in possibly sellingher, she aint going nowhere except with me to the shooting range.

Glad it worked out for you Zippo. I can sympathize with the aging eyes. Your 4" is more a keeper now than ever: apparently it's been at least temporarily discontinued?

Check out the new ones.A lock isn't going to matter for a range gun IMHO.Keep your pre-lock for when you want to look at a pre-lock version.[/QUOTE]

I don't understand the comment about ...for a range gun.... I thought the 617 was very accurate out to 50 yds and good for small game hunting. can someone clarify if this was a bad comment....
