Even though I have several S&W I picked this Colt up today for under $650.00.

Hmmm...I guess I'm a boat anchor collector. I've held onto this one since I traded a Mauser P-08 for it straight up in 1980. I wanted something that I could shoot and not be afraid of breaking. The Mauser might be worth more now, but I know I've enjoyed owning the Trooper more than I would've enjoyed owning the Mauser. They are fine revolvers. You have a sweet specimen, just like mine...

We can anchor the Queen Mary and the QEII with these boat anchors. Two big ol' Colt New Service revolvers, a Model 1909 .45 Colt (top) and Model 1917 .45 ACP (bottom)

Truer words have never been spoken. Nothing goes together better than blued steel and fine wood. |

This could be subtitled the boat anchor photo thread. Heres a canoe anchor, a Colt Banker's Special.
We can do even more boat anchors for various sized craft even though Smith & Wesson is the favorite around here. The Colt gun is worthy too. |

Ahoy, mate. My boat is adrift. Can y'all spare some anchors?

Me.... I kind of like anchors. Here's another New Service from 1939. This time in .357 caliber.

I almost forgot this one; a Lawman Mk III - another .357. I had this one to the range tonight - and it still hits where you aim it (amazing!).

The Early Troopers were the "Python" on the inside but that soon changed as did the few really Good things at Colt. The later Trooper isn't even a good Boat Anchor. MAK

The statement just proves;
1)That idiots exist in the gun community. 2)There are still reasons to go to gun shows,,he might be selling.. > The older Trooper was built on the same action as the Python with the V spring action. The newer MkIII was a makeover by Colt to a coil spring action both in the main spring and a torsion spring for the trigger return spring. The old style acton was just too expensive to make anymore in quantity to try to compete in the L/E and sportsman line. The Python was the only old style V spring action that they made after that. The MkIII actions are very smooth just as they are right out of the box (if you can find a NIB specimen anymore). The MkIII's don't seem to suffer the out-of-time problems the earlier Colt actions do. The only thing I've ever really had to replace on any of them was the trigger return spring that breaks one of it's legs after alot of rounds. Perhaps the original springs supplied to Colt were a bit too hard, but I'm talking a few thousand rounds plus dry fireing. I always replaced with springs from Wolf Spring Co and had no further problems that I heard of. One was used as an indoor league Bullseye gun (22cal) and the shooter shot all stages in DA mode, even slow fire. His scores were in the mid to high 280's range. Not bad at all for a right out of the box, creepy old boat anchor. FWIW, if you run accross a MkIII 'Official Police', grab it,,as they produced very few of those fixed sight revolvers at the start of the MkIII production. |

Did someone say, "Official Police Mk III" ? This one has "Maryland State Police" stamped on the backstrap. It's a .38 spl. caliber and fun to shoot.

Here is my Colt peacekeeper, which is a Trooper Mk V.
During the big mid-80's strike, Colt didn't have enough polishers working to give the usual bright polished blue finish on everything, so they put what people they did have on the high-end guns like the Python, and introduced a line of revolvers with unpolished bead blasted blue finishes. These guns were simply unpolished versions of standard polished models and included: The Peacekeeper version of the Trooper Mark V. The Commando Special version of the Detective Special. And unpolished Cobra's and Agent's. For unknown reasons, Colt didn't assign new names to the Cobra and Agent unpolished models, and as soon as the strike ended, Colt discontinued the unpolished guns. The guns were fitted and finished inside to the same standard as the bright polished models, and were actually very good buys. The Peacekeeper was made from 1985 to 1987. In 1987, the Peacekeeper/Trooper Mark V was fitted with a new profile barrel, made in stainless steel, and sold as the King Cobra. ***Honesty is the foundation of one's character.*** |

My grandad gave me a Colt MK III Trooper this past Christmas that he's had since about 1969 and only fired once. Damn near in excellent shape.
