Hi,
Given that the ammo costs have been skyrocketing, I have been giving more thought to a .22 "trainer" for my SW642. I envision this to practice my draw to first shot placement and so need a size/configuration closest to the 642. The choices are difficult for me. Obviously, the best choice would be a SW 34 or 63 2 inch, but I never see them in my neighborhood and the prices online tend to be high! the gunrange has a Ruger SP101 3 inch .22 and the action is smooth! At 15 feet I can even get 1 hole groups on a very good day. It is however heavier than a J frame and I think the grip/presentation is slightly different. I would have to improvise on the AIWB holster in order to achieve my practice goals. Another choice is the Taurus 94. I have no experience with this gun and the range does not carry it. I wonder how well it holds up and how good the trigger is compared with the SW or a Ruger?

The temptation is to buy the Range Ruger since I know it shoots and I may get a good price as a member, but as a member I do get to shoot it free. Decisions, decisions.

I have a S&W351PD (22 mag) that I really enjoy shooting. Built on a J frame, it is very similar in handling to the .38 J frame I carry daily. The DA trigger seems stiffer to me, but the 351 is my newest gun and has not been shot extensively like my .38s.

Downside for your purposes is that is expensive. It is great fun to shoot.

I feel the Ruger is full step above the Tarus in quality and reliability. You could modify some aftermarket grips to fit the same as the Smith.

I, too, have shot "...1 hole groups on a very good day."

Unfortunately, I only shot once. Wink

You might also look at a S&W 317...

Great Guns. And Wolff springs & action smoothing help a lot.
