This one (the Smith 586) has been my "house gun", my "car gun", and my "trade gun".
Somehow, though, I always end up going back to it. bluedsteel [IMG:left] [/IMG] |

One more time. Here's what 35 years in a hip pocket through hot, humid Georgia Summers will do to a 36. It has provided peace of mind almost constantly, and saved my bacon twice.

In addition to the pre 28 I posted earlier, I would also have to nominate 'ol ugly here for Safe King status. It's from a retired SFPD officer that used it in competition and it's still ready to go around the block a few more times.

Sir, here are a few.
One from the "working gun/beater" end of the spectrum. A little higher up the scale, but still a middle of the road shooter. (Note the speckles on the sideplate and touchup blue on the muzzle.) Here's a little test. Which is the safe queen, and which is the shooter with a couple thousand rounds through it? Hope this helps, and Semper Fi. 1955 Target, my favorite "Safe King" it makes it to the range almost every time I do, makes my shooting look better than it is as well.

The top one has no turn ring/drag line. It probably thinks you don't love it. By the heavy barrel, it's either a 29, 57, or a 25. It's pinned, but unless it's just the angle of the photo, the distance from the back of the cylinder to the recoil shield looks a bit wide for a recessed gun. Barring a "transition gun" 29 or 57, is it a 25-5? Both guns looks great. Closest things I have to safe royalty of any kind: 1980 4" nickel 29-2: I shoot it every chance I get. Global Warming doesn't kill polar bears, Sarah Palin kills polar bears. With her bare hands. |

I've bear hunted with dogs for the past 35+ years. For the past 15+ years this 629 Mtn. Revolver has been carried an average of 70 days per year.

It's custom Colt New Service "Fitz Special". Pick up a copy of "Shooting" by J.H.FitzGerald (1930), a great book and there are still copies around, reprints too. An enlightening book, I always enjoyed the chapter on "The Science of Using a Revolver as a Club". Yup there's a right way and a wrong way to do just about everything. Fitz worked for Colt and was a huge advocate of large caliber (.45ACP .45 Colt) short barreled guns for self defense. He's said to have had his pants pockets specially sewn out of canvas to hold a pair. So the "new" short barreled large caliber S&W N frames are the direct descendants of Fitz's New Service Colts of the 20's and 30's. As the Greeks said "nothing under the sun is new". /b |

Sir, right on the money. Both guns are .45 Colts. The top gun is a 1980-vintage 25-5, and the bottom gun is a 25-9. I bought the 25-9 new in '89 or '90 and have shot it a great deal over the ensuing years. I've only had the 25-5 a couple of weeks (thanks again, IBSandy!), so it shouldn't feel too badly about its relative lack of range time. Hope this helps, and Semper Fi. Its hard to tell in this photo, but my no-dash Model 57 lost a bunch of blue once, then somebody applied a big dose of cold blue. Not pretty, but shoots like a champ.
I'm pretty sure the grips are wrong, too - but they're pretty. ............................. You might beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride. |
