Walter Roper was one. Here's a set of Roper copies by master grip maker Keith Brown:

Fuzzy Farrant for one. Also another old S. California cop, but his name escapes me right now.
Farrant often modified his grips to match his modification of cutting off the "toe" of the butt at a 45degree angle.

Farrant N-frame grips so modified:

John, I think you might mean John Hurst, who was a contemporary of Fuzzy and also worked at the LAPD Academy. He also preferred to "notch" the frame, like Fuzzy did. Here'a a couple of John's grips on a K-frame PPC gun and my 649:

Thank you, OIF2. I recalled the recent topic in which both grip makers were discussed but couldn't recall the name.

Hogue made some very handsome wood grips of conventional two piece construction before designing the Monogrip.

Guy Hogue was also an LAPD instructor and Armorer and knew Farrant and Hurst well. I never met Fuzzy or Guy Hogue, but knew John Hurst very well. He was the greatest pistol shot the LAPD ever produced.

Thanks, GARY.
That 649 .38 was won by me when I was an LAPD probationer in 1985, at the old Southern Cal PPC Championships, hosted by the LAPD. It was engraved, as part of the prize, with my initials and badge by the LA Revolver Club. John Hurst threw in the grips and had Harry Davis at the Academy (one of LAPD's GREAT armorers) tune the action. I put the grips away and used magnas and a grip adapter for 23 years. When I retired I put these back on. I couldn't bring myself to batter these grips up, a gift from a friend, on the streets of LA.

Does anyone still produce grips like these? I've see only a few places Harrets and Hogue that make revolver grips designed for serious shooting.

Thanks in advance,
