About six months ago I visited the local gunshop and had my eye on a new handy looking compact .357. Stainless, light barrel, 3-4", compact grips, adjustable "Target" sights (maybe tru-glo like), 6rd capacity and unusually compact grips (sort of a three finger style). I can't seem to find one like it on s&ws site nor on gunbroker. It looked like a great trail / carry gun. I've seen one since that appeared similar, a model 60 but the barrel seemed heavier with rosewood grips. I'm looking for something with fairly compact grips, never had a problem with .38 +ps out of a stubby.
Hope someone can tell me what it was. Thanks guys! |

Was it the one that went with your favorite handbag and pumps?

redjeepgirl,
Welcome to the forum, It's kinda hard to say, but the fact that it has adjustable sights and six round capacity would lead you to believe it was not a J frame (although a few did have them). It is more likely an L or K frame (one size larger than the J)possibly a model 66 or 686. Lots of different grips are available for any given frame size enabling you to have large grips on a small gun or smaller grips on a larger gun. I know I havn't exactly answered your question, but I'm sure others will respond as well. Best of luck in your search, Jeff Jeff S&WCA #2132 |

If it was a "K" frame, it was used. S&W hasn't made "K" frame .357's for several years now. Not gonna say for sure but I can't remember seeing 357 "K's" with Hi-Viz sights either, even though I could be wrong about that point.
If your not going to fire .357's there are number guns that are rated .38+p that will be smaller and light. |

Hate to disappoint ya. =) I don't own either, I'm thinking it may be this one: http://www.gunblast.com/SW-60Pro.htm but with different grips. Problem I've had with the big tacky rubber grips is that they eventually cause your jacket to ride up revealing your weapon. This will be my second s&w, last one was a model 29 in 10mm I had built by Clements. Doing what needs done and doin it myself. =) |

Cool, I will checkout the k frames. My first revolver was a Taurus 85 in .38. Worked well. The reason I'm looking at a .357 is that I can also use it to recreationally shoot plate and double as a carry weapon, heavier frame would seem to be a bit of an advantage within reason. My last .38 was a Taurus "total titanium", but it was the best bullet puller I've ever owned with any bullets over. 125gr or so. After the 3rd shot, it the cylinder wouldn't turn. Even folks at the club couldn't seem to get a tight enough grip on it to keep it from happening. I've seen it traded back in at the same shop three times now. Do the small scandium smiths suffer this as well? If the cylinder was just a tiny bit longer I doubt it would have been an issue. |

YEP. I don't and won't ever own one.
That's what they make wood stocks for as well as different durometer and texture rubber for. Go look at a Ruger SP101. I carry a 2.25", my son the 3.0625". Both are fine totin guns. |

Redjeepgirl, maybe it's a S&W model 66 with a 2 1/2 or 3" barrel you are looking for. In anycase, from one Mainer to the next, welcome to the forum! It's mostly a friendly place,

Thanks guys, looks like its time to go digging around at the shops again. One of those "I should have just bought it" type situations. I appreciate the leads!

redjeepgirl, Welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like you ant something lite to carry and easy to shoot....Do not go get a Kor L frame...they are simply way too heavy...May I suggest a S&W model 340pd,442,642 or even the model 60...All of them are 5 shot J frames..you can shoot 38special +P in all of them, this is comperable to the .357mag. short barrel ammo..
Go to your local gun range and see if they have any to rent...go shoot a few and see hat feels most comfortable for you to shoot...As far as the grips go....Get the gun first then orry about the grips...There are a ton of people here that can reccomend a great set of grips and grip manufacturers for you..... redjeepgirl, would that be a red Jeep Wrangeler by any chance?
There was an officer on my old dept. that had a gun like that except I believe his was a seven shot. It did have a compact grip and the fiber optic sight. I checked my records and it was a model 386. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum. |
