I have a model 36 2" , nothing special about it at all. I was wondering if anyone has just ordered a letter on a typical S&W in hopes that you may find out something interesting ?

Did you ? Smiler

Many of the "plain" guns I have lettered were invoiced to a major dealer or distributor and have no unusual fetures. I letter most of my collection in order to document each piece.

ANGST - It is perfectly OK to letter any gun if you are curious and want a piece of paper.
There are a specific few people that publically frown on it but don't pay attention when/if they chime in.
Do it because you want to. Your money is as good as their's on their 100 year old gun.
Go for it and .... ENJOY

I letter every gun. You never know when one will be born on your birthday or another day of personal significance, after which time the gun goes up in value to you tremendously (I lettered one gun and it came back as being shipping only 2 days after I was born - definitely a keeper).

Yeah, if you have a pedestrian gun, you probably aren't going to find any real valuable information - but for $30 it makes a really nice accessory to any gun, also makes a neat gift, and it will add value to any gun someday. After all, Mr. Jinks won't be around forever and by many accounts there are no plans to continue the "lettering" service once he passes (luckily, he's healthy now, mind you).

Like those above me in this post, I letter all of my S&W's. I want to have as much documentation as I can on my guns.

My Mom had a "neat" experience with a model 36 that she lettered. My Mom picked up a model 36 "no dash" earlier in the year. She sent off for a letter on her model 36 not long after obtaining it. Come to find out it was part of a Japanese Govt. contract and was sent to Nikko in Tokyo, Japan in 1960. We sure wish it could talk so it could tell us how it got from Tokyo to Mississippi, and all the adventures in between Cool . All of that from a plain,'ol model 36 Wink
