When describing grips does the word 'presentation' mean anything? I see the word used a lot but don't know what it means. Brownell's lists a set of S&W J Frame round butt presentation grips in rosewood manufactured by Smith & Wesson for sale. I am looking for a set of round butt J frame magna type grips but am a little scared to order them not knowing what might come.
Thanks for the help. Dennis |

Smith & Wesson never cataloged "presentation" stocks. They made plain and checked stocks, target or Magna style in walnut and fancy woods. Sometimes, plain stocks (made of fancy wood and usually target style) are incorrectly referred to as presentation stocks. This is most likely because most factory engraved S&W revolvers are fitted with stocks like that.

Mr Bill is correct - they never cataloged "presentation" grips. Our shop used to buy grips in lots of 25 to 30 sets at a time. All were smooth targets, Rosewood and Goncalo for the best wood. Each has it's own appeal for the buyer. We would unpack and inspect each set, and hold aside those which stood out as "presentation" quality" This may be one set out of 10 or 20. If we had a gun that needed a special set of grips, these were used on top quality revolvers. If a customer needed a special set, we tried to fill his needs. Goncalo looks best on the blue guns, and Rosewood looks great on nickle guns. It's all a matter of your likes & dislikes.

Also be aware that Pachmayr makes grips that they call "Presentations" that are rubber.
So when buying sight unseen, be sure the seller doesn't mean Pachmayr Presentations when he says "Oh yeah, it's got presentation grips." ______________________________________________________________________________ Vincent: "But bacon tastes gooood, and pork tastes gooood..." I always see "presentation" stocks to mean smooth (no checkering).
As in these are target stocks: And these are presentation stocks: If someone is referring to presentation grips for a J-frame I will bet you they are smooth magnas. --- 17-6, 586-7, 66-2, 681-1, 36, 27-2, 640, 19-2 Photos: http://bushnell.smugmug.com/Smith%20&%20Wesson |

Or an old guy like me finds some later for his nickle 29-2. (For DennisS, the set on the 629-4 are finger-grove grips also known as combats. Terminology is wide open in S&W speak.) |

I was under this impression also. "presentation grips" = no checkering. |

We'll call 'em whatever you so desire as long as you keep the pics coming!
I love a matte finish set of grips, especially since everything I have has more blonde in them. Thanks. |

S&W did make some stocks from out of the ordinary wood that was not offered for sale and were used on what they called "presentation" guns, which were usually engraved.
These smooth target style grips made from Birdseye Maple are an example... what gun they were originally on I have no clue.
