Those are Fuzzy Farrant grips, modified by removal of the lower finger flare (between what would have been grooves for third and little finger, like the one just below the trigger guard). Very rare grips, but they still look good despite modification. They apparently didn't mess up the checkering.
Well I'm pretty sure it was a Chicago cop's gun and that means a couple of things. First I guess it's possible that the owner changed the trigger. Almost nobody liked the target trigger for DA shooting and the slimmer combat trigger would be a better choice for most holsters. And, as I was just lamenting with a friend that used to work at S&W, that S&W today is almost bereft of the any interesting idiosyncrasies of product, unlike the old days when you could never really be sure (I don't have the box) a specific gun didn't come from the factory that way. Sometime S&W'd run out of a part (like target triggers) and finish the gun with whatever was on hand just to complete and ship the order. Or maybe a fitter couldn't get the target trigger to work and if it was 4:30 on friday...
So I really don't know which is the case with this particular Mod. 25
Blair ,s what's the story?? beside finding your camera charger and losing your N frame grip box.
I just bought this 25-5 new in box last month. Shot it at the range yesterday ,,put 150 rds. of 250gr. l.s.w.c.s through it. Big grin! I couldn't help myself.
Congratulations on your new? acquisition. Mine was $550. no grips. I like your fuzzys ,they are cool . Are you going to keep them? If you want to sell them,or trade my e-mail is in my profile.

Here's a M25-5 that I round butted back in the '80s. I narrowed the target trigger a little, ground off the grooves, and rounded the whole thing.

Now that I've had the gun apart and got a better look at the trigger of my 25-5, it definitely looks like it was a target trigger that was narrowed and had the grooves polished off. It's a pretty common modification for a 25 that's been used as a service revolver; whoever did the machining did a pretty good job as well.
