Ok, long ago I was exposed to two S&W guns and neither impressed me much. I'm not fussy, but neither would function properly. Could have been when Smith was having quality issues.

Anyway, after all these years, I have a DA bug and S&Ws have caught my eye once again. Dipping my toes into the water, I walked into a shop and found a 19-4 with a 4" barrel. Pinned and recessed and I know it was the last year for that. The story is that the gun sat for years, with very little use. It looks pretty dirty though, and although it was hard to tell, there could have been some corrosion on the back of the hammer. Funtion seemed fine. Bluing seems very good and the wood is good as well. I'm in no rush and was really looking for a 45 Colt mountain gun. But the 19 felt good and from your reviews, I can see why. Is $300 out of line?

$300 is a good deal for any P&R Model 19 in good shape!

Thanks. I would like to have gone over it better, but I wasn't prepared : ( If you buy used guns by the light of most gunshops, it could be the difference between shooting dimes at 25 yards, or have a gun blow up on the first shot! I bring a good light and as I'm in the over 40 crowd, usuaully a small magnifier to see fine cracks, etc.

Looks like I'll just run the bubble bath now. That's for the Mrs and it work wonders on the conscience when I'm buying a "toy" : )

I recently paid $500 for one, though it was in nearly perfect condition.
