Yes, the X frame main spring and rebound springs are the same as other N frame revolvers. However, in my opinion, it's unwise to try and lighten the trigger on the 500. There's a potential of it doubling using heavy loads. NRA Benefactor Member |

I was thinking more of the Wolff full strength power rib mainspring as it is supposed to smooth out the action some while still giving full strength hammer operation.

Yuk yuk ...my 500's less than 6 months old and I've vibrated loose the following parts (with recoil):
- Extractor rod - Rear sights (twice, lost the elevation nut once) - Orange plastic insert in the front site S&W graciously sent new sights and sights parts to me, but I found the only real fix on the rear sight is a drop of thread locker on the threads of the elevation screw. I had to put threadlocker on the extractor rod (inside) threads as well. I had to SuperGlue the orange insert back into the front sight. I have maybe 700 rounds through the gun, maybe only 50 full-house loads (with 535gr Keith style bullets, 30 gr H110). I wonder what'll vibrate loose next? Brian |

I've vibrated all of those parts loose on my 500, plus the internal lock. Didn't think that was possible, but it happened. Luckily I was at an indoor range since I'd forgotten my screwdriver set.

What is the cylindrical stub on the side of the older hands above the trigger assembly for and can they be replaced with newer hands without the stub in older revolvers with no trouble? |

The trigger and hand pictured is out of an X frame (500 mag). This hand pin fits into a part (I believe it's called the bolt lock) shown in this post. It's an improvement on all N frame guns to beef up the action (also referred as an endurance package). Currently, all N frame magnums and X frames have this feature. This part will prevent the bolt from moving to the rear under recoil, which will keep the cylinder closed while firing heavy loads. And yes, just grind the extra length of the pin and use an "endurance package" hand in an older gun if needed. NRA Benefactor Member |
