I am the proud owner of a nice New Model #3 shipped in 1880. That is the entire extent of my antique 'collection'. For my next acquisition, I would like to find an original Schofield with an uncut, 7" barrel. I would be grateful if some of those who collect Schofields could email me (you can find my email under my public profile) and point me toward some possible places to look or sources. I already started to check out GunBroker, GunsAmerica, and Auction Arms, as well as the famous armchairgunshow site and the ocyoung site. If there are more obscure sites, or individuals with no websites, I'd be grateful for that info. On the other hand, maybe this is like asking a fisherman where his secret fishing hole is.

Kirk,
Were it me, I'd stay tight with Jim Supica... he seems to have a steady stream of early Smith's from this era. Look for Jim at: http://www.armchairgunshow.com Big Bore Top Breaks are found here: http://www.armchairgunshow.com/otsBA_S_W_Americans.htm When contemplating the purchase a firearm of this type, who you buy from is just as important as what you buy. There are alot of fakes out there.... Jim's credentials are impeccable. He is a Past President of the S&WCA and a Member of this board. Good Luck. Drew |

Thanks, Drew. You are certainly right about being careful about who I buy from. I've been burned a few times in the past when I started collection vintage Winchesters. Thanks.

Jim Supica is your best bet. You might also contact Joe Salter he is a licenced dealer in both Canada and the US and sometimes gets old Smiths. He has a good web site. Another good bet would be David Carroll (spelling). If you can make it go to the Tulsa gun show about the third week in October, most of the Smith Collectors Association will be there and you'll get a chance to meet some of the people I mentioned, greta bunch of guys.

Kirk,
Buff's reference to Joe Salter is a good one. Here's Joe's website: http://www.joesalter.com/index.html I've only had passing dealings with him and I find that he can run Hot-or-Cold depending upon whether he's buying or Selling. Still, I've never heard of an unhappy buyer who had dealt with Joe.... in fact, the opposite is true. Drew |

I purchased an old Winchester from Joe Salter and was very pleased. I'll be keeping an eye on his site too.

With the gun laws as they are in Canada, would you have trouble buying a gun in the US and having it shipped to you? Gary S&WCA 1837 S&WHF 225 "The field mouse runs fast, but the owl can see at night" |

Gary, no problem at all. In fact, antique handguns are not even considered firearms here in Canada. I do need to provide some evidence that it is an antique for Canada customs, but that is all.

Kirk, I will be at Tulsa and will have for sale one of the best condition 1st model Schofields known and it was also a San Francisco marked "Police" gun from the SF Sand Lot Anti-Chinese riots of 1877, issued to the Committee of Safety (Vigilanties) by Benicia Arsenal. Price will be in the low 5 figures. Ed.

Ed, I'd love to purchase that gun, but I'm sure it will be well beyond my reach at this time.
Thanks for the heads up though. Kirk |

Hi im also in Canada and am intrested in a Beater 45 Schofeild revolver.
One that has a decent frame but a pitted bore and shortened barrel is OK I like to Rebuild guns. So one you might think no one would consider buying i just might! as long as the price refects the condition. even just a pile of parts with a frame in there id be intrested in. |
