I recently inherited what I believe is a pre Model 10 5 screw with s/n 2417XX. Could someone give me the approximate manufacture date?

Thanks

I have serial# 284704 which was shipped in June, 1918.
It would be called a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905-4th Change. The term "pre-Model 10" is commonly used for those produced after WWII and up until 1957 when S&W started stamping the model numbers on their pistols.
Pictures would be nice, we love pictures! Big Grin

Assuming that's the number from the butt of the grip frame and (if) there's no letter prefix (V, S, SV, C or K) yours is from very early in the 4th Change serial range. The lowest published S/N for the 4th Change (in .38 Special) is 241704 in 1915.

Tell us more.... Sounds like you might have an interesting old gun.
