TrustNO1,
Congrats! sounds like you got an original transition HD and I can't wait to see the pics. Does your gun have the large ejector rod knob on it?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill - Have a little patience with the FNG here. As soon as I get out of the ol' 9 to 5, will post pictures. Now, some questions hopefully can be answered. Again, put up with the FNG until I get up to speed:

1. On the ejector rod knob - I've looked at others on this site and it appears to be the large knob. Is there an apparent way to tell, even to me, the difference?

2. Stocks are not original. What are the original stocks for this firearm or will that be determined by the letter from Roy. As a BTW, met Roy three years ago and he was gracious enough to sign his book for me. In my profession, we toured S&W factory and at the end of the tour, Mr. Jinks poresented each of us with his book, sined it to each of us personally, and gave us his phone number if we ever had any questions. As I'm sure all know, he still works for S&W but he works from the house. S&W put a line into his home and he'll answer calls. I've had to call him several times professionally and he is a delightful man. Not trying to brag or put myself out there, it's just interesting when you can actually sit down and talk with one of theS&W historians.

TrustNO1,
No problem.... your gun is truly a transition all the way. The grips would have been the "high horned" magnas. If you go to my website and look at transitions, the blued guns all have these type of grips. The target grips for N frame guns weren't available until 1950-52 timeframe and yours is probably a 1946 version.
Hope this helps,
Bill
Yes-it is neat to talk to and listen to Roy!

Here are examples of the “high-horn” magnas that Bill mentioned as correct for the transitional HD and Outdoorsman revolvers.

hey - got home and looked at the mod 28 i bought. looks like they are the magnas - diamond around the screw, silver medallion, i wish I would have recognized that before I sanded them soon after I bought the guns. were they worth anything?

ahhh - i'm just havin' fun. seriously, they look like the magnas but the finish does not look right. it's not a glossy, medium brown color but more of a dull, no finish darker walnut color. does that make sense? anyway, are the magnas period for the 36/44 and the target grips for the 28? anyone care to edumacate the new guy?

Trustno1-
Jerry has some beautiful grips doesn't he?! Big Grin
I don't know the serial number range of the gun in the picture above, but looks to be a post 1950 gun based on the hammer, grips and finish-which are all very nice.

trustno1:

I may have mislead Bill a little by posting this one ! He is well aware of my fetish for .38/44 Outdoorsman. Smiler

If you look very closely you can see the checkering on the top strap.
It is actually an early 1950's pre-27. I have seen a number of pre-27s and pre-28s with grips of similar finish.

I stumbled on this one at a gun shop here in southern California for a VERY good price. Smiler

Guns like this are available in California but you have to be very patient and VERY lucky.

T#1,
Very nice HD, especially a transitional in nickle. I would be proud to own that one, with an incredibly low purchase price a great bonus. Big Grin

Nice gun at $250.

Wrong stocks. Those are Target stocks from 1968-1981.

I am no expert at spotting a refinish. If yours is redone it was a good job.

Even if replated it's still worth more than what you paid for it.
