By that I mean COLTS!
Went to the auction last nite. (Same as M-1911)Passed on a lot of beautiful S&W Model 19 and Ruger Security Sixes of various barrel lengths that went for paltry sums , hoping to get the 3in Mod.66 I specifically went for. I examined it prior to the start of bidding. From the condition of gun and holster , it was obvious this piece saw action. The opening (phone) bid was $300. I knew all was lost. It eventually went for over $600! :eek3: The like dozen or so new Sec-Sixes and 19s that went BEFORE it barely broke $300ea. But I did come home with this. A Colt New Service in .455 Eley (Webley). It was obviously heavily rusted and reblued at one time , but the chambers and bore are fine. Action ain't bad either. No collectors item so it COULD become a project. I might ream the shoulders forward a bit and make it .45 Long Colt shooter. I can probably sell the grips for more than I paid for the gun. Once more , cash & carry with my C&R on file at the auction house. Next firearms auction , Sept 2?. |

I love the Colt New Service. It's my favorite Colt revolver. It's a grand, elegant, and stately revolver from another era. Honkin' big as well. I hand load for the .455 so would really enjoy that one just as it is since it has decent mechanics and bore. The .455, as a cartridge, is a hoot to play with in its own right. Your new Colt doesn't look so bad in it's present condition as is represented in your photos. You're right about the grips. They'd be worth a pretty penny and aren't correct for the revolver anyway. Thanks for letting us see this one.

Great New Services all!
Muddyboot, I'll have another .38-40 New Service one day. I let one just like yours go in a trade once. Still think about it from time to time. Here's my two. Top: M1909, bottom, M1917. |
