I think I have a S&W .44 Double Action (DA) First Model.
Caliber S&W .44 ctg.(the guy I bought it from said it is a .44 Russian caliber). Barrel 4" I believe the finish was nickel. Serial #49228 Any information about what I have, would be much appreciated. Thanks! This message has been edited. Last edited by: whitecoyote, |

I'm guessing a model 1881. The grip does not look right to me to be the Russian model, though the trigger guard is more or less the same for both.

I believe your identification is correct, by the serial number the gun was probably finished in the early 1900's, but according to the standard catalog all of the frames had been made by 1899.

This .44 Frontier model looks very similar to what I have.
http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/540103904/m/8891085023 These revolvers also looks like what I have. http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/540103904/m/6181080913 http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/540103904/m/3291038692 http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/540103904/m/6601093592 I'm still trying to narrow it down as to exactly what I have, and its DOB. Any help in identifying this revolver is much appreciated. Thanks. This message has been edited. Last edited by: whitecoyote, |

The caliber is easy to tell whether it is a .44S&W Russian or a .44WCF ( .44-40 ), measure the cylinder length. If it's 1 7/16th in. it's a .44 Russian, if it is 1 9/16th in. it's a .44WCF. Also look down the chambers, if you see a ring, it's a Russian, if you do not and it's smooth all the way through, it's .44WCF. The .44S&W and the .44WCF are two different models of the Model Three Double Action revolvers, however all frames were made before 1899 so the guns are all antiques by BATF standards.

I checked the cylinder out. The caliber is definitely a .44 Russian.
What are the differances between the model one, and the model three? How can I tell which one I have? Thanks. |
