I found at a gun show an old S&W 32 Long
- I think it's 2nd or 3rd model hand ejector round butt as no model # on frame last Patent date Dec 1914 - serial# 365### range

Missing sideplate screw , all the numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder match but the grips numbers inside don't and have a J and I think this is an I frame.

So I came to haunt your knowledgeable halls to find out where to get a nickled screw and if I should try and shoot it. (some one told me I shouldn't as he thought it was made in the early 20's). The hand is running out of steam cuz if you rotate it real slow it doesn't lock on every chamber (does on 4 of 6). Barrels 4 1/4 long some finish worn away but not bad condition I think for a gun that old.

Any way thanks for any help you can give.

Artful - new guy on your boards

It looks like a .32 Hand Ejector 3rd Model. From the picture It looks like possibly the trigger & hammer are also plated. If so, it wouldn't be a factory nickle plating. They were mfg. 1917 to 1942, and your S/N would put it in the middle somewhere, possibly around 1930. .32 S&W long ammo is pretty mild, and most probably wouldn't hurt it, but have it checked over by a qualified gunsmith first and make sure. I have one with a 3260xx S/N and it was shipped Aug. 1920. I have shot mine with factory ammo, with no ill effects.

Artful,

Welcome! You won't hurt it one bit shooting it with factory loads or standar hand loads. Grips on it are 1970s-1980s that someone shortened to fit the I frame. That one most likely wore black hard rubber short top grips. (If you need a set, I've probably got some)

As for the slow carry-up, there's a good chance that it just needs a good tear-down and cleaning. Gunk build-up in the hand window will cause that. Also, sticky old oil inside the cylinder will keep it from rotating smoothly. Take it appart, clean it, and lightly lube it. The problem may go away.

As for the missing screw, try Numrich (www.e-gunparts.com). If they don't have it, I'm sure someone here can spare one.

Enjoy it. They shoot great.

Chris

Thanks for the help, the hammer and trigger are not nickled - someone had me look under the grips at the frame and it has a N - so I was told it came nickled from the factory. I'll detail clean it and see if that helps.

I'd call it a side plate screw.

When I got it the screw that holds the yoke
was missing so I moved the screw from behind the trigger to hold the yoke. I also notice
upon closer examination that the screw at the
top of the side plate doesn't look original either it's round headed - it's a replacement isn't it... Frowner

On another board I was given a link to a parts supply for old guns Jack First in South Dakota.... http://www.jackfirstgun.com/

What would be the correct nominclature for these screws?
