Need some advice, a friend of mine has a smith he wants to sell me for $200. I don't have a picture, but it appears to be a 1905 M&P 2" nickel. The serial numbers match on barrel, frame and cylinder. The serial number was in the 700K range. The nickel is a old renickel that is about 90%, but the trigger and hammer are nickeled or chromed too. The grips were from a 1980s K-frame. From what I have read, the square butt 2" in this gun is rare. It does not have a box. I saw the ad on David Carrol's for his, but his is a high 90's orginal piece. Also, the right side of the barrel is blank, but the barrel does not look to have been altered on the gun I am looking at. Suggestions on this gun?

The most obvious thing is does the ejector rod have a place to lock to or is it just hanging in the breeze like a Colt? I have seen some long discussions where this fact was not noted.

I believe it was just by itself under the barrel and did not lock into anything, reminded me of an old Colt Detective Special.

This is one of those if you want it, buy it decisions. Personally, I would pass as collector value is negligible due to the refinish and a bad one at that and incorrect grips. Put your money away, save a little more and buy something nicer. OR...offer a little less for this, buy it and enjoy shooting it.

With no extractor lug, the barrel has been cut.

Walk away from it.

This is what I was trying to point out. If the ejector rod has no lug to attach to IT IS CUT it cannot be a factory original barrel.
