My local gunshop has an "M&P" that they say was made in 1913.
They want $235 for it. I looked at it, the gun looks like it's been in a vault since it was made-never fired. There seems to be nothing remarkable about it other than the condition.
I remember it's a .38, and the barrel seems o be around 6"
Can anyone give me a simple rundown on this pistol? Is the M&P collectable ?

Thanks

Sean

All I could tell you is that the Serial Number should be someplace around 200000 for a M&P made in 1913. As per SCSW, if serial # is BETWEEN 146900 AND 241703 IT IS A .38 M&P Model 1905 3RD Change. IMO, $ 235.00 for the gun in the condition you described is a very good price. I would buy it without a second thought. If by chance the gun is a Target Model(adjustable sights) it is worth alot more.
You should check that all serial numbers match. Serial numbers are found on butt, rear of Cylinder, flat of barrel and behind the extractor star. You might also find the serial number written in pencil on back of right grip panel. Also be sure the gun has NOT been REFINISHED. And yes, it is collectable but, as all, condition is the key.

I have an M&P with serial No. 202xxx that's been in the family since about 1932. Nickel plating is rough but it is a great shooting revolver. If you can find one for $235 in decent shape, collectible or not, I'd jump on it. There is nothing out there new that will shoot better for that price or a lot more.
