You didn't mention what type of dog it was... pointy-eared (more typical for patrol), or floppy eared (typical for single-purpose dope and bomb dogs)

He was a very laid back yellow lab, and your thinking is about like I had thought initially, that he was perhaps a dog that didn't quite fit police work so he wound up doing something else. He was obviously extremely intelligent, and if he did pick up on gun odor, HE WAS FAST!!!!!!!
Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.
