Figuring that comfort and accuracy are equal, and picking one of these, I'd load those BB .44 Specials in the M29 and be happy. Looking at other revolvers: In .357 the seven shot 686s or one of the eight shot .357 N frames. In a larger bore, whatever caliber you prefer. If six rounds of .357ish was enough, then the K frames are too comfortable (and proven and classic and etc...) to pass up.

A Model 58 in .41 magnum would do most of what you want it to do, albeit that you'd have a 4" gun and not a three inch gun. I've carried a Model 58 IWB, and I used an inexpensive/low tech holster. I found it comfortable (I'm 6'1" and 170ish), but I was in an urban setting. Out in the woods, I'd think that a tanker holster or OWB behind the hip would keep it out of the way and more secure. I'm weighed down by a lot of other stuff - armor, BUG, pocket survival kit, ammunition - and I still managed an N frame without complaint. Federal offers a 250 grain flat nosed "cast core" hunting round for the .41 mag, that should suffice to kill most things. Otherwise you can load the Silvertips which deliver 10mm powerlevels or any of the 210 grain JHP. If you want more gun than that, try a .44 and look into the ammunition offerings of Garrett.

What about a Ruger New Vaquero in 45 Colt or a Blackhawk in 44 Magnum in a proper western holster?

Then there you go. I'd use that one. A .41 mag. has tons of asswippage, shoots flatter than a .44 mag. and ought to be controllable in rapid fire for the practiced.
Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

That takes all the fun out of it, LOL. Seriously, your 657 will probably be a fine choice and should give good service.

Hey Todd, If you've already got a 3" 657, you have one of the best woods carry guns you can get. I went through this a year or more ago as we started spending time in bear country. After MUCH research, I decided either a 3" 657 or 3" 629 was the right thing for me. I found a clean, nice 3" 629 cheaper and faster than the 657, so went with that. I assume you can open carry in CA - we can here. I am going to throw in a pic because I love the carry rig so much - it's from El Paso and is their "tanker." Gun is handy, but off your hip and less susceptible to banging into things when you are in brush, woods, or doing some activity or "work." you hardly notice a 3" N frame carried this way.
Physics 101: "Velocity" is speed and direction. Otherwise it's just "speed."
