How is that sitcom relevant to reality? In reality, such a move would likely gotten him shot to death.

Well, it's relevent because the North Koreans on M*A*S*H* had better fire discipline than your local hold-up man. Relying on a .25 against an armed hold-up man would likely get you shot to death too. If you're planning on shooting it out with him, I'd use a bigger gun. Plus, it was kinda funny the way Major Burns thought he was well armed and how him being armed got Major Hoolihan all worked up.

I ALWAYS carry my single blade WENGER Swiss Army folding lock-back knife in my back pocket. It has a wicked saw/knife blade that'll cut through just about anything! Eeker That's my back-up to my M-36.

If you are serious about carrying a gun.....get a serious carry gun! Roll Eyes Why would you want anything less? Roll Eyes There is no reason not to carry a small .38 or a 9 mm.! They make 'em small and light.....S&W 342 and Kahr PM9. There is no GOOD excuse for carrying a .22 or a .25.......or even a .32. They are all UNPOWERED!!!! (The new .327 is another story. Wink) Bob

The .25 Auto will be carried only in what is considered low risk, low threat level situations. It is not a carry gun that will be relied upon at any great length. I always carry my SOG Flash II (assisted-opening) large knife too. Right now, I have a Beretta Tomcat (.32 ACP) and my Charter "Undercoverette" (.32 H&R Magnum) at my disposal. If I want to move up from there, I'll grab my Bersa .380 and tuck it in the small of my back for a short jaunt.

I regard the Excam .25 as a "last ditch" piece before resorting to my knife. I will not be carrying it as either a primary, or even a secondary weapon. It may fill a "tertiary" role to other arms that I carry, such as my Charter Arms Bulldog (1991, 3-inch in .44 S&W Special.)

I have already taken that into account as well. In a local "mebership" department store, UMC .25 ACP FMJ loads are costing $17.99 (+tax.) for a box of 50. I won't likely be taking the little Excam out for any "extended" range time! I'll likely run about 25 rounds through it to make certain that the pistol is reliable and hits where it should. After that, it will likely either sit on top of my valet, or in my sock drawer, until needed.

You know what? You're right. A .25 is plenty good enough for "low risk" environments like walking around your apartment building.

I'd definately get one and feel good about relying on it against a high risk need in a low risk environment.

Why not get a smaller knife for low risk and low threat areas? You can cut someone almost as bad, almost as quickly and save a lot of weight. You gotta be just as close for either knife.

Have you spoken to anyone you know who has shot an armed person with a .25? Did the armed person get any shots off before they were out of the fight after being hit by the .25?

Why would so many cops and retired cops be telling people who want to carry guns that they should carry something more significant than a .25acp?

"9 out of 10 cops recommend their friends who carry guns carry something like a .38 or bigger...." Just like the old Trident commercial and dentists!

I'd humbly suggest expending more than half a box of ammunition through the little pistol before relying on it as a defensive weapon. Getting hits, reliably and quickly, at distances out to 50ft (the length of the indoor range I used at the time) required about two bricks worth of ammunition through my little 21A before I was confident with it. I learned to "half ass" point shoot it as the sights were not such as to lend themselves to any sort of precision. It can be done, but takes a fair amount of practice. It happened to be the only .22LR handgun that I had at the time, so I used it extensively and in the process gained a fair of amount of hands on experience about what a "mouse gun" can and cannot do. A good example can give reliable hits on a man sized target out to some distance, getting that level of skill with one isn't always a quick and easy process for the user.

I also wouldn't leave a small pistol sitting if it was to be carried. These small guns are more likely to need regular cleaning and maintenance to function reliably than their service sized kin in the auto pistol world. I certainly would urge caution regarding keeping one in a sock drawer since socks are notorious for producing lint (so much so that they are sometimes mentioned as being good for emergency tinder in survival manuals).

I wouldn't even trust the knock down power of a .25acp for mice. I use a .357 S&W mag for those. (I use a lot of spackle too)

For reliable self defense I wouldn't consider leaveing the house without my RPG in it's upside down backwards "Lewis & martin" shoulder holster, with a .500 S&W in my pocket as a "back up". Not forgeting my airborne /SOG/ranger/killer commando MK XXXVIA1 folding assault dagger, and 180,000,000 candle power "tac-lite"

This setup is OK for every day protection. But if I'm headed "in harms way" then I'll pack some real weapons.

If your gonna CCW you gotta get serious. I'd tell you how I've learned these "tricks of the trade" (the hard way) But if I told you, then I'd have to kill you. (you never really retire from THIS kind of unit)

I gave my brother-in-law a Model 49 for CCW along with about 500 rounds of ammo. He doesn't even carry it and instead packs a 100 year-old Colt Vest Pocket .25acp because the 49 is "too big"...but he won't give it back and hasn't fired a round through it....I bet the bastard sold it...

One of my best friends once said, "there's a reason the first letter of family is F".

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.
