NY is a real test...my buddy retired there and can not find any agency close to where he is that will fill the bill on being in "compliance"..one agency down in Rockland County (close to NYC) will do it but my buddy is up near Lake Placid. Can't believe there are no NY State Police/NY DOC folks that want to take advantage of this...glad I moved from there years ago...

The Bureau of Prisons will not qualify it's retirees, nor allow them to use the firing range here in Lompoc. To qualify, we have a state instructor certify all retirees at the local Rod & Gun Club every April.

The Bureau of Prisons will take your best years, use and abuse you and cut you loose without batting an eye...great organization!

In Maryland you may be qualified by the state PROVIDED you are a resident of Maryland, or the agency from which you retired may provide the qualifications.

Be safe.

I don't know about you, but Chicago can kiss mine anytime.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

I'm recently retired from the MT Hwy Patrol. There is NOTHING on any level out here as far as a qual card or quals by any Dept. I'm going to look into this and see what I can come up with.

You'd think there would be a NATIONAL card available.

Very interesting, Frank. I am somewhat surprised Montana doesn't have a program to qualify folks for LEOSA.

You might want to contact your FOP or similar entity to press the issue. Here in MD, the state Police and Correctional Training Commission (and certain local agencies) provides the training; Maryland State Police issues the credentials.

There will NOT be a "National" program as states' standards vary. The LEOSA certification does allow for CCW in every state subject to delineated restrictions state-by-state. I'd say those restrictions are minimal and you may CCW just about 99% of the time...nationwide.

Be safe.

Not sure why you want them to KMA...but if you want to CCW in Chicago you can with your proper LEOSA certification. Wink

Be safe.

In a certain Illinois county, all you get is a "Thanks for sticking your neck out for peanuts, now go away".

That's your agency policy then, not IL's. IL was one of the first states to implement statewide a LEOSA program for retirees. Several other states contacted us and have patterned their program after IL's. The only delay IL had in getting our program up and running was getting the legislative authority for the ILETSB to run the program. When LEOSA was signed in July 2004 the IL Legislature was out of session. As soon as they returned they passed the bill giving authority to the ILETSB to implement the program statewide.
If your agency won't qualify you then you can get qualified thru your local mobile training board. You can get the info thru the ILETSB website set up specifically for retiree qualification. http://www.irocc.org/

ispcapt, thanks, I checked the requirements:

1. "...regularly employed...for...15 years or more."
2. "has...benefits under the retirement plan."
3. "...photographic identification issued by the (former) agency..."

I strike out on all 3, but thanks for the info.

My agency is in a dither about HR-218 carry. It gives us more authority to carry as a retiree than we have as active Special Agents.

We are not permitted back-up guns or off-duty carry. On-duty carry was once prohibited with specific exception. Now we can carry on-duty with numerous restrictions.

Our institutional norm is to throw anyone involved in a gun related incident to the wolves. Our primary mission is to protect our superiors and management from career damaging incidents in their climb to the top.

Unsavory duties are relegated to highly paid contractors who can be tossed under a bus by the front office.

Our real ability to carry comes at retirement, under HR-218. Now management is embarrassed by its retirees having more carry authority than active Special Agents. This is causing some bureaucratic hand-wringing as our leadership seeks a correction.

By the way, we're hiring. Our guys usually leave for better employment. We always seem to be hiring.

I qualify and carry under Arizona/Leosa standards but am planning a move to NY (upstate) and have been told I will have to apply for a CCW in the county I live in. NYSP apparently has no plans to qualify under LEOSA.
