How to shorten a six inch H&R .22LR barrel to snub length? Retainment of the front sight is immaterial as the gun will be used to train point shooting from a hip draw.

I cut back an original charter .44 Special from 3" to 2" easily. First, hacksaw off the barrel. Then use a (leather) padded vise to hold the barrel while you true up the muzzle with a file. A fine file can then be used to polish the muzzle and cut sharp edges.

I silver-soldered the sight back on but the job didn't last, so I just left it off. It looks like a fat .38. A charter rep at an NRA convention told me to watch for bullets pulling out under recoil and sticking out of the front of the cylinder and tying up the gun due to the reduced weight.

Elmer wrote of old-timers unscrewing the barrels of their .45's and just shooting out of the cylinder. Not too shabby when you realize the slug comes out of the cylinder with about half of it's final velocity

Unless you do a GOOD job of cleaning and trueing the muzzle accuracy will be for crap. You can get a tool from Brownell's with a t-handle and a pilot just for squaring off muzzles.
