There was some discussion about this holster in another thread Some people seemed interested in it, but wanted to see better pictures.

Link to the holster on Hoffners website - Ultrux

I purchased one a month or so ago, and thought I would share my opinon. Hopefully it will help someone who is considering purchasing one.

First, a few pictures of the holster with my 681.

As some theorized in the other thread, the gun rides to high. This in turn makes the gun unstable. I tried several different positions, and a couple of different belts. Nothing seemed to work.

Here's a pic of the holster and gun after strapping it on.

Here's a pic of what happens after walking around, bending down and/or sitting and then getting back up.

I've got a pretty sturdy belt on. Maybe there is a better belt that would help this holster.

I can't get comfortable with this holster. I'm constantly checking the gun and readjusting it. Unfortunately for me, I don't forsee ever using it. If someone thinks it would suit them, let me know. I'll sell it.

I tried one of these for awhile, and I think it's a great idea that is just flawed in the execution. First, the extension needs to be long enough for a 6" barrel, regardles of what length barrel you intend to carry. That way, "butt tip out" will be avoided. Second, the belt straps need to be farther apart. I actually modified mine by drilling a hole for the rear strap back near the triggerguard and moving the Tee nut, snap and rear strap back there. It works better, but the longer forward extension is still needed. With these two simple changes, I think this holster would work wonderfully, and getting the cylinder completely above the belt greatly aids concealment and comfort.

I hadn't thought of moving the strap. I might try that. Thanks for the tip.

RZMike, is the holster made from leather or from some type of plastic/kydex? Thanks.

I bought the same holster for my 696+. Great idea, and love the cylinder above the belt, but as stated above, I had to give up wearing it because it constantly was moving around and I was afraid it would just "fall off" or the gun would fall out because it is so top heavy (rides very high). I might take it back to Hoffners and ask them their thoughts since it is local here in Houston where I live. It is unacceptable to me the way it is. It is a shame, they make great kydex holsters and they are great people to work with. We shall see!!

So it doesn't work AND it couldn't win a beauty contest if the only other contestant was a Glock.

Nice.

Do you have a real gun belt?

If you have a 6" L-frame try it with the barrel sticking through the bottom of the holster. Perhaps that will help. I carry that way in my L frame holsters whenever I'm packing my 6" 686.

Thanks for the info. I've been interested in that holster and you may have saved me some money.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

RZ...I also want to thank you for the heads up...it's always appreciated when someone posts a review of a product that might save others money... Smiler

BTW, I don't know how I shopped before the internet...I research everything now...besides being steered clear of questionable items, it lets you find the best price. The money I save more than pays for the monthly internet service.

I have the same problem with the Hoffner's Muirage built for a S&W 45 Revolver with a 4 inch bbl.

The belt I use to anchor this set up with is a Wm Davis 1 3/4" double thickness gun belt. I have moved the strap back to the trigger guard area but the front strap needs to be in front of the cylinder.

What I think we want is a VMX by Sparks only in kydex.

You guys with big guns may want to try holsters from CABO (Carry A Big One) holstes.

They appear to be designed to have the cylinder ride above the belt but they are more substantial than Hoffners' and the straps are farther apart, which helps with stability.

Asi no, si andas paseando,
Y de noche sobre todo,
Debes llevarlo de modo
Que al salir, salga cortando.

Thanks for the heads up, Wyatt. I may give the cat a call. I'm going to want something different for my 629-1 5" full underlug frankenstein gun.

I'll second the CABO. It's light, simple, comfortable, rides very high, and works.

I tried CABO but I find my extra support boxer briefs works okay for that.

I have one and I like it. more comfortable than any with the cylinder below the belt.

From your picture it would appear that you have it too far forward over the hip. Try moving it back more toward your butt. Pants that are larger than you normally wear are a must.
That being said, I still prefer an belt holster.
