I'm going to be driving from Ohio to Colorado. My Ohio CHL is valid in Indiana, but not in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska or Colorado.

I know that Iowa and Illinois are lost causes for car carry, but Colorado allows open or concealed carry in one's car. I can't seem to get any good info about automobile carry in Nebraska - can anyone help?

I just took a similar trip and found I must keep by handgun unloaded and stored away while traveling in NE.

Thanks for the info. The Handgunlaw.us site has blank spaces for Nebraska laws and doesn't list anything under car/RV carry.

Wish that site could have been more helpful.

The USCCA has info regarding travel and other states' laws, but you may have to be a member to access them:

http://www.usconcealedcarry.com

The NRA site may also have current info.

I have always read that according to Federal Law, we have the right to "peaceable journey".
Weapon must be unloaded, separate from ammo, and either locked in trunk, or as far away from the driver as possible (SUV, station wagon, etc.), and in a locked container. You can't stop for anything much, other than fuel.
Of course there are certain states that will still arrest you for possession irregardless of Federal law, like NY, NJ, MA to name a few....And in NJ, hollowpoint ammo is fined at a rate of $100 per round.
(These are my best recollections, and I've been wrong before. ;-) )

Thanks again for your efforts. I checked the NRA site and it appears you need a Nebraska license for car carry. Since they have no reciprocity and don't issue licenses to non-residents, I guess the gun goes in the trunk in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska.

Some states, like Colorado and New Mexico, treat your vehicle as an extension of your home and allow unlicensed carry in the vehicle.

The Federal law you're referring to (FOPA) isn't really relevant in this case because the states I'll be passing through don't prohibit carrying an unloaded handgun in your trunk. FOPA does come into play in places like NY and Chicago that prohibit or license mere ownership of handguns. I've never heard of arrests or prosecutions of people on continuous journeys through those places in their cars - that's precisely what FOPA protects. There have been problems with air travelers at the NY airports, but I believe the US DOJ has ruled that FOPA protects them as well.

Wish I could have been more helpful, but lightning ate my electronics about 5 weeks ago, and along with my computer, went all the bookmarks/resources built up over the last 10 years.
I feel handicapped as a result.

You might want to look into getting a non-resident Utah or Florida CCW, if that would give you reciprosity with those states in which you travel.

Put it in the trunk, separate the ammo. If you have a padlock, lock up the gunbag, or gunrug. Be upfront about what's in the trunk, they will probably let you pass without problems.

Why is it that some insist on volunteering things to police that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with the stop.

I do not run drugs. If police stop me I will assume it is regarding a traffic matter. Since there is nothing inside my vehicle that they need to see regarding a traffic violation, they will not get to search there.

Threats of dogs or warrant do not scare me. The dog will not get a hit unless the cop plants something or makes the dog "hit". And I know the warrant threat is bullshit and I will call the bluff.

I always am. I look them straight in the eye and say when asked, "I can't imagine that you would have the slightest interest in anything I have in my trunk, nor any cause to search it."

And that's the straight up truth.

A good dog handler can make his dog hit anytime he wants to. A common way is to keep a sack of weed in his pocket and rub his fingers in it, then touch the car. Second time around, the dog sits down. He can justify the weed possession for "training" purposes.

I'm pretty sure a good lawyer can this shit thrown out and the K9 cop sued for false arrest pretty easily.

I doubt there are many cops stupid enough to jeopardize themselves this way, though I'm sure there are a few. After all, the war on drugs makes PDs do a lot of questionable shit to get their confiscation spoils.

HKSmith,

Read the header on the RV/Car Carry page. It says that if the state is not listed you must store the firearm unload in your trunk. Which means you must follow the federal Law on traveling in states not listed.

I mentioned that because after you disclose there is a gun in your vehicle, they will want to know how you are carrying it. Being evasive is not a good plan. Nebraska law requires me to furnish my permit, as well as my license on a stop. A CCW will show when your license is run, and if you have not disclosed it you will be in trouble. Normally if you disclose it's in the trunk in your range bag, they don't ask to see it.
