Sierra used to make a 125 grain flat nose bullet just for the .30-30. I tried them in both a Winchester Model 94 Carbine and a Winchester Model 54 Carbine. I've never much enjoyed the 94 Carbine off the bench rest anyway and they toned it down a bit. The Bolt action Model 54 grouped them with typical aplomb. Loaded to 2300-2400 fps it'd take whitetail deer out to 100 yards or so and would be similar in performance to the 7.62X39. I've not checked to see if this bullet is still in the Sierra catalog.

Really, a M64 with a 20" barrel? Or did you mean a M94 carbine?

Try both bullet weights. Some 30/30's show a marked preference for one over the other. For powder, 30 grains of IMR 3031 with a 150- grain bullet or 29 grains with a 170-grain bullet is about as classic as it gets.

I have a 64 carbine with a 20 inch barrel. It was a police department gun in Sioux City and has police department markings on the stock. I've been
using 125 grain Sierras with 34 grains of WW748 lately for a mild accurate load. The serial number traces it to 1935. It's still a good shooter. |

Model 64s in a carbine version do exist and they are really not common. The main difference from the common 94 is the mag tube length and the lever. Here is a link to one from a very reputable VA rare arms dealer.

After some Chrony work, 150gn Sierra RN w/ 28.7 grains of IMR3031 gives me consistant rounds at 2200fps, and a tight grouping. Cases are full lengthsized.
