Here's the deal, in Indiana you can hunt with rifles in pistol calibers. The bullet has to be at least .357 and the case length can't be over 1.625. So I'm getting an Encore in 460 S&W with a 20" barrel that you can shoot 454 Casull out of. I was wondering about trimming the 460 case down to 1.625 and loading to the starting loads of the 460 if I would gain much over the 454 Casull. I'm just trying to get the most velocity and stay legal.

Thanks,
Shayn

That doesn't sound safe. Why not shoot 45 colt out of the same gun?

shaynster,

You don't need to improve on the performance of the .454. As a matter of fact, the standard .454 is more power than necessary for Deer. A .45 Colt chambered rifle like the Marlin 1894 can be loaded with bullets as heavy as 325 gr. at velocities up to 14-1500 fps. That is equivalent to a Black Powder .45-70 which is known to be one of the calibers which was used to kill probably several hundred-thousand Buffalo. You just don't anything more tahn this for what you will be hunting in your home state.

I know the 454 has plenty of power. I'm just trying to extend the range that I can shoot.

Thanks,
Shayn

If your gonna be using a 20" barrel just use a rifle.

I'd much rather manuever a rifle around than a 20" pistol.

Cant load ammo fast enough to keep the guns fed.
Old data is only old because it was printed before the laywers got out of hand.

Look at 45colt contender/Blackhawk loads. put them in a 454 and go up.

The 460 revolver is good for 200 yrds., so in a rifle it should be good for 300 yards. Need to go beyond that get a 308 to do it.
